Vernon's Directories

Burlington Public Library has copies of Vernon's Burlington and Hamilton Suburban Directory from 1959 to 2013. Searching can be done by name, address or phone number.

The collection of City Directories covers the City of Hamilton Suburban Directory from 1959 to 1979, the Burlington and Hamilton Suburban Directory from 1980 to 2009 and the suburban directories for Ancaster, Burlington, Dundas, Stone Creek and Waterdown from 2010-2013.

Fonds consists of photographs, newsletters and news clippings, published reports and plans, board correspondence, agenda minutes, marketing and promotional materials, library correspondence, and scrapbooks relating to the history and creation of Burlington Public Library’s spaces. Records contained in this fonds primary document the material culture of Burlington Public Library’s history predominantly from 1935 to 2009.

By the late 1990s to the early 2000s, Burlington Public Library’s governing and corporate records as well as marketing and promotional material gradually shift from physical format to born digital content. Current information such as library guidebooks, board minutes, annual reports and strategic plans from 2019 and onward are accessible online via the library’s website located under the about tab.

Tweedsmuir Histories
Collection · [1897-2004]

Collection predominantly contains oversized scrapbooks compiled by local Aldershot and Nelson branches of the Women's Institute, under the direction of The Federated Women’s Institute of Ontario with a purpose to document village histories. These types of scrapbooks known as Tweedsmuir Histories, were named after the Governor General's wife Lady Tweedsmuir, who encouraged Women’s Institute branches to preserve the history and the changing environments of rural communities. Scrapbooks include newspaper clippings, photographs, letters, maps, as well as handwritten and typed historical accounts. Also included in this collection are administration records for the Nelson Women's Institute.

Fonds consists of diaries written by Edwin Walker Vivian. Edwin writes about the weather, his daily chores and his activities including the literary club and skating. The fonds also contains school examination certificates and family photographs.

Fonds consists of scrapbook albums illustrating the history of the Girl Guiding movement in Burlington, Ontario between 1930 and 1953. The albums include reports from brownie and guide units and the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire, lists of leaders and commissioners, photographs, correspondence, certificates, badges, postcards and copies of newspaper articles. Newspaper articles and photographs of the opening of the Trefoil Lodge and the Junior Band are included.
