Collection consists of 35mm slides collected by Heritage York over the years. Included are many reproductions of historic photographs depicting built history in the former City of York; the restoration of the Lambton House; Heritage York events; and other materials used for various local history talks and presentations.

Collection consists of heritage display boards once exhibited in the IGA (Independent Grocers Alliance) grocery store that was located on Dundas Street West near Runnymede Road. They feature enlarged versions of historic photographs of local heritage buildings and settings. Included are images of the Lambton House; Lambton Mill; the Howland family residence in Lambton Mills; the CPR office on Runnymede and St. Clair; the Toll Gate house on Dundas and St. Clair; the Molsons Bank; and others.

This collection was used for a Heritage York exhibition titled "Selling History/Giving Credit" at Lambton House on Mar. 22, 2015.

CA ON00428 2021.20 · Collection

Collection contains three wooden planes. The planes belonged to Chris Stevenson's father, who used them in the Lambton area.

Wooden planes have been used for centuries by carpenters as a tool to remove thin pieces of wood and create decorative elements. They typically consist of a blade, sometimes called an iron, encased in a piece of wood and held in place by a wedge.

Collection contains 11 empty bottles that range in dates over the 1900s. They are demonstrative of what may have been served or used at Lambton House while it was operational as a tavern.

Highlights include: a 1903 bottle of Canadian whiskey produced by the Hamilton Royal Distillery; a bottle of Ballantine's London dry gin, imported and bottled in Ontario ca. 1900; a 75th anniversary Canada Dry ginger ale bottle manufactured in 1979; a bottle of "Toronto's Very Own" amber lager produced by Molson Canadian ca. 1999; and several unmarked bottles, and bottles labeled O'Keefe's.

Striped wool blanket

Item is one grey, wool blanket. It has black and blue stripes at either end, and is indicative of what may have been used at Lambton House while it was operational. Additionally it relates to the wool mills that would have been present in the surrounding area.

Seam rolls

Item contains two seam rolls, a tool used for pressing open the seams of narrow areas like sleeves and pant legs. Often the rolls were stuffed with sawdust or scrap fabric. One of the rolls consists of a rolled magazine, dating to 1955, encased in a hand sewn fabric sleeves. The other roll is machine sewn using cotton and wool fabrics.

Boudoir cap

Item contains one crochet boudoir cap, or sleeping cap. The pink thread is crocheted in a small net pattern with a scalloped edge. Boudoir caps became popular in the 19th century as a sort of hairnet to protect the user’s hairstyle as they slept. By the early 1900s, caps like this lace example became popular for their femininity.

Society silk doilies

Item consist of 5 cloth doilies, or table scarves, with silk thread embroidery. 4 of the cloths have a strawberry motifs, and the larger doily features a floral design. Society silk, or society work, refers to this style of embroidery that features shiny silk embroidery floss and natural themes of carnations, roses, violets, and strawberries. It became popular in North America during the late 1800s and early 1900s, both as a hobby and a way for women to earn money from home.

Collection consists of a variety of table linens including dinner napkins, tablecloths, table scarves and runners, coasters, and placemats. The items mostly date to the early late 1800s and early 1900s, however it's likely some of the pieces may have a later date of manufacturing.
The collection includes a lot of examples of twentieth century lace styles including Venetian, Battenberg, Broderie Anglaise and Armenian. Additional techniques include white thread embroidery, cutwork embroidery, picot, ladder and scalloped hems, and drawn thread designs. Some of the pieces are a part of matching sets of four or six items. Highlights from the collection include: Nottingham lace coasters; 1940s wine glass coasters or “slippers”; Madeira style cocktail napkins; hand embroidered, monogram napkins; and a floral designed organdy doily.

Dress form

Item is one fabric covered, wooden dress form. It is raised on a cast iron stand with a wheeled, footed base. The height of the mannequin is adjustable by a crank on the back of the dress form. Marks on the front identify it as a size 34.

Night dress

Item is one peignoir, or robe-style nightgown. It likely dates to the late 1800s or early 1900s. The dress features white on white embroidery, ruffle trim and rows of pleating.

Apron

Item is a linen apron. Sometimes called a waitress apron or a maid apron, it features delicate embroidered details, two pockets and a scalloped hem. The item likely dates to the early 20th century.

Kitchen towels

Item consists of three linen kitchen towels. They are woven in the huckaback style, which was popular during the late 1800s and early 1900 for its durability and absorbance. Two of the towels feature additional detailing on the hems, one with lace and the other with a damask pattern. The items are indicative of what may have been used at Lambton House while it was operational.

Collection contains various furnishings and household items that were acquired for their aesthetics and relevance to the time period in which Lambton House would have been operational.

CA ON00428 2000.01 · Collection · ca. 1950 - 1956

Collection consists of lantern slides from the personal collection of Mel Bryce. These slide would have been used as part of Bryce's local history lectures. The images predominately document the changing landscape and architecture of York Township and surrounding areas from the 1850s - 1950s, including Lambton Mills, The Humber Dam, Lambton Tavern, and Dundas Street. Also included is Bryce's Spencer Lens Company Delineascope Model D projector, which he would have used for his lectures.

Lantern slides were very popular during the time for academic, commercial, and religious purposes. The lantern slides among Bryces collection represent many examples created by producers from the Toronto area. Included are those produced by The Ryerson Press; United Church Publishing House; Charles Potter; The Methodist Book and Publishing House; Presbyterian Publications; as well as many unmark lantern slides.

Many of the images featured are also found in "York Township: An Historical Summary, 1850-1954", written by J.C Boylen. Compared to the black & white reproductions in the book, many of those same images are rendered in brilliant handpainted colours on the slides, including many photographs by Toronto photographer James V. Salmon (1911-1958).

Collection consists of a selection of digitized photographs from the personal collection of Ted McGaffin. Depicted are various scene of Hurricane Hazel and its aftermath, predominately in the area of Woodbridge; the McLean house on St. Marks Rd in Warren Park; and the Parker Barber Shop which was located at the southwest corner of Jane & Dundas. The Parker Barber Shop was owned by McGaffin's step-grandfather, George Wilson.
