CA ON00428 2000.01 · Collection · ca. 1950 - 1956

Collection consists of lantern slides from the personal collection of Mel Bryce. These slide would have been used as part of Bryce's local history lectures. The images predominately document the changing landscape and architecture of York Township and surrounding areas from the 1850s - 1950s, including Lambton Mills, The Humber Dam, Lambton Tavern, and Dundas Street. Also included is Bryce's Spencer Lens Company Delineascope Model D projector, which he would have used for his lectures.

Lantern slides were very popular during the time for academic, commercial, and religious purposes. The lantern slides among Bryces collection represent many examples created by producers from the Toronto area. Included are those produced by The Ryerson Press; United Church Publishing House; Charles Potter; The Methodist Book and Publishing House; Presbyterian Publications; as well as many unmark lantern slides.

Many of the images featured are also found in "York Township: An Historical Summary, 1850-1954", written by J.C Boylen. Compared to the black & white reproductions in the book, many of those same images are rendered in brilliant handpainted colours on the slides, including many photographs by Toronto photographer James V. Salmon (1911-1958).

Item is one chamber pot, or portable toilet, with lid and handle. Produced by Dudson Wilcox & Till Ltd. It features embossing and the floral "clio" print from their range of transferware patterns. The pot itself has a green design, whereas the design on the lid is in dark blue and the floral pattern differs slightly. This may suggests the lid is not the original.

Chamber pots were often kept under a bed or in a nightstand. They remained a common household item until the mid twentieth century, but variations of the chamber pot are still in use today.

Print is a reproduction of a portrait of John George Lambton, also referred to as "Radical Jack" or Lord Lambton, at 27 years old. It is a reproduction of an oil painting made by Thomas Phillips in 1820. The oil painting is based on a much smaller mezzotint produced a year earlier by Phillips and Samuel William Reynolds.

Lambton was born in 1792 in present-day Westminster. First elected to British parliament in 1813, Lambton served until 1833 and helped draft the Reform Bill of 1832. Following his resignation, he was raised to the house of lords, becoming Viscount Lambton and Earl of Durham. On May 29th, 1838, Lambton arrived in Upper Canada, in the role of Governor General and High Commissioner to British North America. He was tasked with the responsibility of preparing a report on the Canadian Rebellions of 1837. His famous "Report on the Affairs of British North America", sometimes referred to as the Durham Report, was released to mixed reviews a year later, in Jan. 1839. The result of the report was the union of Upper and Lower Canada into a single colony. Lambton's work in Canada also was instrumental in paving the way for responsible government.

William Pearce Howland was so impressed by Lambton that he named Lambton Mills, formerly Cooper's Mills, after him around 1850. The two men most likely never met.

The original sale is dated to 1787, however there were questions raised about the legitimacy of the documents and about the delineation of the land. In 1805 a formal purchase was documented, and is referenced in the text of the map. This is accompanied by the signatures of the purchase. This collection of tableware includes plates, bowls, and platters in various sizes. All the items have a matching blue and white motif in a style referred to as Flow Blue ceramics. In terms of design, it is similar to traditional blue and white china, except the ceramics undergo a process during glazing that creates an intentional blur of the colours. Sometimes called "poor man's china", it became popular for its inexpensive price, durability and its ability to be mass produced. Known as "transferware", a variety of different patterns arose in an attempt to replicate the look of eastern ceramic wares. Patterns were largely derived from Chinese-export wares and existent (topographical, historical and botanical) images known as source prints. These kinds of ceramics became increasingly popular in the North American market. This set is demonstrative of the kind of tableware that may have been used at Lambton House when it was operational.
