Vesey A. Brown fonds

This fonds consists of Vesey Brown’s medical education and military certificates and personal correspondence, as well as material relating to Brown and Masingberd family property in London and Morpeth, Ontario. Majority of fonds consists of Series 4 that is Brown's work as watercolour artist, mainly depicting London, Port Stanley and Elgin County.

The Grace Hospital ephemera collection is an assembly of material in various formats that have been accumulated by the UHN Archives from a variety of disparate sources including, but not limited to, family members of former staff or students, other repositories, or anonymous donations. Collection consists of photographs and objects. Material in the collection relates to the history of the Grace Hospital and its predecessor, the Toronto Homeopathic Hospital, and its staff or students including the Grace Hospital Training School for Nurses. Material is arranged by accession. No particular order has been imposed by the Archivist.

File 1 contains a 1912 graduation photograph from Grace Hospital Training School for Nurses. File 2 contains the nursing graduation pin for Bernice Marie Charters.

Fonds consists of 4 file folders of lecture notes that Mary took while a student at the Toronto Western Hospital Training School for Nurses. While mostly hand-written notes and sketches, some typewritten class handouts, publications, and exam booklets are also included. Each original file folder was annotated on the front to indicate contents or provide personal comments about the course. The portion of the original file folder with Mary’s personal annotations have been included within the contents of the corresponding file. These records are significant as they represent the learning experience of a typical nursing student from the Toronto Western Hospital in the late 1930s.

File 1.2 includes the booklet “Intestinal and Bowel Management” copyright 1928, Deshell Laboratories, Inc., Chicago; The Toronto Family Court Report for the Year 1939; and copies of the Examination for the Registration of Nurses in the Province of Ontario from 1930, 1935, 1937, 1939, and 1940.

File 1.4 includes notes on professional problems, ethics, two case histories and an exam paper.

The fonds consists of Dr. Vanarsdale Blakslee's personal and medical business receipts between the years of 1915 and 1940. There are receipts for medical supplies, tax receipts, and personal receipts such as household bills and car repairs. Many of the medical supply invoices are for products shipped by mail from Toronto or Montreal. Some of these companies in Toronto include: J.F Hartz Co. Limited, Ingram & Bell, Ethical Drug Products Limited, and from Montreal Frank W. Horner Limited, Manufacturing Chemists. The majority of the receipts are from local businesses in Belleville and surrounding areas such as: F.W Jeffery Harware Merchant, Midland, Ontario, F.S Anderson Co. Genuine Scranton Coal, W.H Lattimer Druggist Belleville, Sprague the Cleaner, Greenleaf's Garage Machine Shop Foundry Electrical Contractors, R. Oliphant & Son Butchers, McLaughlin Motor Car Company, Quinte Bicycle Store, The Belleville Pharmacy, E.D Finkle Electrical Contractor, J.S McKeown The Prescription Druggist, Porter, Butler and Payne Barristers, Solicitors Notaries Public etc. The Belleville Vulcanizing Co. This series consists of material created by and collected about Mother Constance Dunn. This includes biographical research; a bound New Testament owned by Mother Constance Dunn; photographs of Mother Constance Dunn and her sister, Sister Norberta Dunn; correspondence concerning a new Motherhouse, the foundation of the hospital in Sarnia; jubilees; correspondence, some written in Latin, with the Bishop of London, John T. Kidd, and the Archbishop of Edmonton, J. H. MacDonald, concerning the canonical status of the Edmonton community (the canonical status, governance, and fiscal responsibility of the Edmonton community had been an ongoing issue since the Edmonton community had been founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of London in 1922); and letters from Bishop Dignan of Sault Ste. Marie to Mother Constance expressing his condolences on the deaths of several Sisters.

The collection contains digital photos dating from 1898 to 1954. Most of them show members of the Coulombe family when they were living in Hearst, including Eveline's parents as well as her siblings: André, Cécile, Georgette, Léo, Robert and Yvonne. In addition, there are some pictures of their neighbors and friends from Hearst, such as Claude Larose's family. Others illustrate students at école Sainte-Thérèse and a few buildings in Hearst, at that time. There are also textual documents that the donor has kept, as souvenirs from her childhood in Hearst. It includes an autograph album where we find the signature of several people living in Hearst in the early 1940s, as well as religious images and correspondence.

This fonds attests to the activities and involvement of the Sudbury and District Ministerial Association (SDMA) in the community. The fonds contains their constitution, minutes and related papers, general correspondence, cash books, reports, pamphlets and mailing lists. The records are directly related to the organization of SDMA.

More specifically, this fonds documents the social and educational involvement of an organization of Protestant churches in the Sudbury region. The cooperation of SDMA with several community-based organizations, as well as the participation of SDMA with regard to inter-church activities, is well documented. SDMA was involved in activities in the community such as: radio and television broadcasts of Sunday services, a nursing school at Memorial Hospital, help for addiction and alcoholism, an emergency counselling service, religious education, a Northern Ontario home for unwed mothers, helping the families of strikers, weekly services at Pioneer Manor and the Sudbury Sanatorium, and submitting a report to the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism.

There are no documents for the year 1960, and very few documents for the years 1955 and 1959.

Dr. F. W. Luney fonds

The Dr. F. W. Luney fonds consists of 14 series (and 2 subseries) of records chronicling his scholarly beginnings as a medical student at the University of Western Ontario, his appointment as Senior Pathologist at Victoria Hospital, and the extent of his professional career as Clinical Laboratory Chief at St. Joseph’s Hospital until his retirement in 1961. During his career, Dr. Luney would enlist in the Canadian Army Medical Services Division during WWI, establish a Clinical Pathology Laboratory at St. Joseph’s Hospital in 1928, conduct extensive research in blood transfusion techniques, direct the opening of the Blood Bank Department and St. Joseph’s Hospital in 1945, establish private consulting services for smaller hospitals in southern Ontario, and create the Dr. F. W. Luney Fund to raise funds for the Medical Library at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Records of note include: well-maintained, original photographs of Dr. Luney and fellow classmates posing with a cadaver; records created to document body parts and organs donated to Luney’s private “Museum”; personal notebooks outlining his medical training and professional experiences; a selection of diplomas and certificates; records of his $5,000 donation to the Medical Library at St. Joseph’s Hospital; photographs depicting the two-person multiple syringe apparatus he invented; notes from lectures and seminars that he gave on pathology and blood transfusion-related subjects; and a 60th anniversary portrait of Dr. F. W. Luney with his fellow 1914 graduates.
