Bryces' Cheese Factory fonds
Fonds · [ca. 1800s]

Fonds contains two accounts ledgers maintained by Bryces' Cheese Factory.

Bryces' Cheese Factory
Fonds · 1793-1844

The Ministry of Natural Resources fonds consists of 33 large-scale plans (registered 1793-1844; incorporating annotations dating up to 1981) created by the Surveyor General’s Office documenting 23 townships along the north shore of Lake Erie. The plans show lot and concession numbers, major roads, First Nations settlements, mills, creeks, swamps, and local geographic information. Many maps contain an assortment of notes on specific geographic features and have settler names written in; others are blank. The maps were frequently used as working documents, and bear revisions and annotations dating years after their apparent creation.

Seven maps lack any sort of date; in these cases, the Archives of Ontario’s estimation has been used. In other cases, a map bears dates of annotation but no written date of registration; in these cases the date range of the annotations has been used as an approximate date.

Fonds · 1802-1849

The Thomas Talbot fonds includes 45 large-format plans (registered 1802-1832; incorporating annotations dated 1810-1849) and a lease settlement register (created and maintained 1842-1846; includes retroactive entries dated 1825-1836) documenting land distribution in the town of London and the 30 townships in six counties throughout southwestern Ontario in which Talbot controlled land allocation. The plans show survey grids, clergy and school reserves, town sites (including London), First Nations villages, mill seats, footpaths, trails, waterways and crossings, local and regional roads. Most significantly, perhaps, the plans include personal land settlement information, with the names of grantees and dates of occupation penciled in by Talbot on individual lots.

A note on dating the maps: in many cases, Talbot treated them as working documents, adding, removing, overwriting and revising annotations, often over a period of several years, and, in a few instances, including information retroactive to the creation of the document. For example, item F 501-1-0-0-18 was registered in 1824, but incorporates annotations dated 1817-1840. 34 of the plans have been registered, and their registration dates have been adopted as a "date of creation". 10 plans bear no registration date, but do incorporate dated annotations: in the absence of other evidence, the earliest and latest dated annotations in these plans have been adopted as representing the plan's temporal scope. One plan (F 501-1-0-0-38) contains no dated data and has been assigned an estimated date based on internal evidence and comparison with related plans.

Fonds · 1916-1917

Fonds consists of correspondence between Private William Stafford and Helena Robertson while William was serving overseas in England, France and Belgium during the First World War. During the time of their correspondence, Helena was living in Lambeth, Ontario.
During the dark days of the First World War, France found itself host to many Belgian refugee women and children while war ravaged their homeland. Anxious to help their men-folk in their battle for freedom, the women, among other things, made beautiful hand embroidered cards to sell to the Allied soldiers. These have since become some of the most desirable nostalgia available to the postcard world. Some of these cards have found their way to the Elgin County Museum and with them come a love story. The cards had been sent from the battlefields of France and Belgium by Gunner Will Stafford to Helena Robertson of Lambeth. They are beautiful cards with touching messages – ‘A kiss from France’ or ‘With loving wishes’ and ‘I don’t forget you’. Both Will and Helena sent other cards of a more common type. Some were in a numbered series, each carrying a verse from a well known poem or hymn. Thus the receiver would know if all the mail was reaching its destination. In this case, as indicated by the messages, they also acted as tracers for the letters which interspersed the cards. It was later learned that Will came home in good health, married Helena and together they had a daughter, Elsie and a son, Arnold. J. Kirby
