Fonds consists of one small photo album with handwritten notes and fifteen small black and white photos taken during the Second World War. Includes two small newspaper clippings. These photos were collected by Iris Birtwistle and other female volunteers at the Catholic Soldiers Club in Aldershot, United Kingdom. Also includes five mounted photographs, some duplicates, of members of 1st Canadian Infantry Brigade Anti-Tank Coy., Canadian Active Service Force (C.A.S.F.) and Headquarters 1st Canadian Infantry Brigade.

There is are various documents about the RCAF Ground Instructional Section and Photographic Section during the early 1920s.

Collection consists of research material on Ernest Donat Therrien’s experience as a prisoner of war during the Second World War. Includes emails between Janie and Gary Therrien and Dr. Steve Harris listing the 22nd Armoured Regiment’s movements from mobilization until the end of the war. Also includes emails describing different sources of information that were consulted including Library and Archives Canada, The Red Cross, and The Memories Project. The research material contains an excerpt from the book “A Measure of Protest” written by A.H. LeReverend who was a POW at Stalag XIB with Ernest Therrien. Copies of the 22nd Armoured Regiment’s War Diary for 24 October 1944 to 29 Oct 1944, and Orders for 27 October 1944 are included in the research along with emails exchanged between Jakke Arnouts in Essen, Belgium and Janie and Gary Therrien in relation to the precise location Ernest Therrien was captured and a possible tour of the site.

Collection consists of reproductions of late eighteenth-century documents that belonged to the heirs of Madame DesBoisrenard and related to the lands near the village of Vimy, France and the present-day Canadian National Vimy Memorial. Documents include a surveyor's map of the lands with a report, and legal documents listing the various pieces of land with their limits, names of tenants and rents in money and goods collected from the properties.

The focus was on the creation of a colonial naval reserve in Canada, from among the fishermen in Nova Scotia and possibly Newfoundland.

Fonds consists of transcriptions of letters and copies of photographs sent home by Lionel Austen-Leigh from his time on HMSC CC-1. The letters date from the beginning of Austen-Leigh’s time on HMSC CC-1 in 1914 to his discharge in 1915. There are two black and white photographs included with the letters. One photograph is of the submarine CC-1. The other photograph is of the submarine’s crew. Finally there is a photocopy of one of the original letters which contains a hand-drawn image of the submarine.

Fonds consists of one pamphlet, published in 1915 by the Department of Militia and Defence, entitled “How to Qualify: A Short Guide for Officers, and Non-Commissioned Officers of the Cavalry and Infantry, Canadian Militia”. Specifically, the pamphlet provides instructions on qualifying courses, held at various Cavalry and Infantry Schools of Instruction in Canada, for officer candidates. Also provides a list of recommended books officers are encouraged to obtain before attending a course, as well as a syllabus of both Infantry and Cavalry courses (Appendix I and II).

Fonds consists of Fortress Orders for the Military District No. 6 (HQ Halifax) from the period 1908 to 1909 that are catalogued as 95/82 and three original volumes of Fortress Orders for the Military District No. 6 (HQ Halifax) from the period 1914 to 1916 that are catalogued as 2003/42. The Fortress Orders consist of instructions regarding garrison duties, mobilization, gun practice, rations, court martials as well as inspections of CEF units, etc. The three volumes from 1914 to 1916 also include one colour image entitled “Canadian Soldier” from the painting by Lilias Torrance Newton, RCA.

Fonds consist of a First World War typescript diary and two photograph albums by Lieutenant Cyprian Herbert Andrews that documents his service with the Royal Flying Corps (RFC). Andrews’ diary spans from the 30 September, 1917 – 6 February, 1918. He records his experiences in the diary with the RFC through the various squadrons: 83 Squadron, 90 C.T.S, 91 C.T.S, and 87 C.T.S. He also documents his cadet training at the School of Military Aeronautics and his flight experiences across different locations. The photographs albums accompany his diary on life in the RFC, and includes pictures of the various camps, classes, locations, planes and fellow RFC members Andrews encounters.

Fonds consists of one oversize ledger entitled “Record of Service OMFC Medical Units”. The document contains information on various medical units during the First World War including unit names, dates and commanding officers. The entries also include a remarks section that makes note of various matters of interest such as notable individuals, transfer of patients, or events such as bombings or the awarding of medals. Certain entries in the ledger are followed by a skeleton history of the unit. There are 89 entries in total. Additionally, there is a two-part photocopied map of the south of England enclosed with No. 2 Advanced Depot Medical Stores. The map includes many of the units mentioned in the ledger but does not appear to be contemporaneous with it.

Fonds consists of documents regarding to the “Halifax DefenseScheme for 1921.” The documents detail Canadian military action in Halifax and the surrounding area at the precautionary stage and at the war stage, and are divided into three folders. The first folder contains Chapters III, IV and V of the plan, which are comprised of text and tables. The second folder contains introductory material to the work and notes classifying the types of military telegraphs, followed by Chapters I, II and IV. The final folder holds correspondence, memos and several large maps. This is a version of the defense scheme that was revised in November 1921.

Fonds consists of the office papers of Lt-Gen J.E. Vance used in the preparation and implementation of the 1987 White Paper. There are documents regarding a review of Canada’s defence policy, the White Paper process and implementation, the implementation of the new defence policy and the documentation of the White Paper. Includes a wide variety of documents, including memoranda, notes, correspondence, briefings, drafts, working papers, essays and minutes to meetings. There is a very detailed inventory of the contents for each of the fourteen folders at the beginning of the fonds and at the beginning of each folder.

Includes Belanger’s Field Message Book from his First World War service, complete with various notes and a code; post cards; various invitations; programmes; menus, correspondence and other documents. Many of the programmes and invitations relate to events hosted by or in favour of the Royal Air Force, Royal Flying Corps and later aviation events.

Fonds consists of a British Admiralty publication that is part of the Confidential Reference Books (CB) series and is entitled “The Technical History and Index: A Serial History of Technical Problems Dealt with By Admiralty Departments Volume 3 Part 37 Inception and Development of the Northern Base.” The document was created in response to a request for an account of technical developments relating to the establishment and reduction of the Northern Base. The Northern Base was located at Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands, Scotland, United Kingdom. The base was used as Great Britain’s primary Northern Naval Base during the First and Second World Wars. This includes reports regarding communication throughout the islands; fuel and water supply; dockyard work; fleet repair work; and provisions required for the base and its ships.
