Northern Woman Journal

Northern Woman Journal began as a newsletter covering feminist issues for readers in Northwestern Ontario, and developed into a journal featuring political stories at the location, provincial, national, and international level, fiction and artwork, personal stories, letters and opinions, and information on local events.

The Journal's creation was closely linked to the community of feminists including Margaret Phillips and the management of the Northern Woman Bookstore.

Fonds consists of records created and accumulated by Marilou McPhedran through her activities as a lawyer, legal reformer, and activist. These records illustrate the breadth and variety of McPhedran's work in the areas of constitutional reform, women's international and national rights, women's health, and violence against women and children. Included in the fonds are administrative records of a number of non-profit organizations and committees of which she was a founder, including the Women's Legal Education Action Fund, the Gerstein Centre, the Metropolitan Action Committee on Violence against Women and Children, and the Ad Hoc Committee of Canadian Women on the Constitution. Series consists of records accumulated by Marilou McPhedran pertaining to the work of the Program Advisory Committee of the Canadian Firearms Program, formed in February 2003, on which McPhedran served as a member until its disbandment in 2005. The records in this series document the general activities of the committee, particularly its quarterly meetings held in Ottawa, Ontario. Also included in this series are records pertaining to the Coalition for Gun Control, with which McPhedran was associated prior to and during her time on the Program Advisory Committee. These records include correspondence, reports, government documents, agendas, notes, news releases, fact sheets, briefs, newspaper clippings, and presentation slides (paper version).

The buttons in this series are personal, made using family photographs, and protest/organizational buttons.

Buchanan family fonds

The Buchanan family fonds consists mostly of correspondence, invitations, photographs, books and other types of documents. The records pertain to the years that George and Lilla Buchanan were residents of Sudbury. Most of the correspondence is between Lilla Buchanan and her family and friends. There are also letters of congratulations for the appointment of George Buchanan as King's Counsel. A program, photographs and a newspaper clipping document the Royal Visit to Sudbury on June 5, 1939. The photographs of the fonds depict the Buchanan family and their friends. There are also 11 copies of photographs depicting Sudbury in the early 1900s, people of the community, and early railway construction.

The fonds chronicles Council activities and functions, and documents decisions and deliberations, and relationship with the civic administration, the Province of Ontario, the County of York, the Village of Woodbridge before 1971, and the Regional Municipality of York after 1971.

Harry Moscoe fonds

Fonds consists of textual and photographic records accumulated by Mr. Harry Moscoe during the 1940 to 1947 period. The majority of these records document Mr. Moscoe's activities as Executive Director of the Canadian Jewish Congress, Eastern Region, War Efforts Committee. A few files also document examples of his personal, financial and legal office activities, while still living in Kirkland Lake and later in Montreal. War Efforts Committee records focus on the CJC's responsibilities for: Servicemen's Centres in Halifax, Montreal, Moncton and St. John, Red Cross blood drives, tracking Jewish officers, Jewish casualties, and regular meetings of the War Efforts Committee. Also here are extensive newspaper clippings documenting Jewish servicemen' activities, casualties, heroics and decorations. Of special note is a 20 x 25 cm b&w photograph within File 18, "Jewish Chaplains". The image features seven uniformed Canadian Jewish chaplains who served during the Second World War. They are: Rabbi Abraham Babb, Rabbi David Monson, Rabbi Oscar Fassman, Rabbi Charles Bender, Rabbi Samuel Cass, Rabbi Jacob Eisen and Rabbi Morrris Casriel Katz.

McDermot lived on Smith Street and James E. Walsh lived on Pine Street. They represented the Pine Grove factory - soap and candle manufacturers and were agents for Fire, Life and Marine Insurance in 1856.
