Fonds comprises original artwork by artist-ornithologist Terry M. Shortt (1911-1986) created between 1924 and 1975. The artwork is predominantly composed of ornithological studies as well as a smaller number of illustrations depicting various other animals, plants, and landscapes. The majority of works in the fonds are a product of ROM field expeditions in which Shortt traveled to the Arctic, Mexico, India, Africa, and various other locations for the purpose of collecting and illustrating specimens for museum display and research. Also included are original drawings from Shortt's memoir Not As the Crow Flies (1975). Mediums include watercolour paintings (predominant), pen drawings, graphite and/or pencil sketches, and printed reproductions. Records arrived in no discernible order and no order was imposed by the archivist.

Charles Hose fonds
CA ON00259 SC35 · Fonds · 1879-1907

Fonds consists of a manuscript for Hose’s book, The Birds of Borneo, and a map of Borneo. The manuscript of The Birds of Borneo is an unbound, handwritten copy of the work. The book opens with a discussion of the kinds of bird species that live on Borneo. The book then lists the individual species of each order that were found on Borneo, giving the taxonomic entry for the species, as well as more detailed information of behaviour and habitat. There are blank spaces where there were to be illustrations of the birds added to the printed text. The map of Borneo is a small, foldable item, with cloth reinforcing the folds. The inside of the map is a printed map of Borneo, by James Wyld, Geographer to the Queen. The map appears to have been hand-coloured by C. Hose. On the back of the printed map is a hand drawn image from 1879 which shows a detail of the island. It is possible that this was drawn by Hose, but there is no specific mention of the artist.
