The collection consists of 18 albums containing over 230 pages of 5 x 7 cyanotype photographs that photo-document the construction of the Peterborough Lift Lock in chronological order. Each album has a title such as: "Concrete: Main Walls and Wings", "Pit Excavation", "Hydro Lock Culvert", "Stone Pitching", "Taylor Air Compressor" and so on. The albums were likely produced for the Trent Canal or the federal Department of Public Works.

Fonds consists of an original, unpublished manuscript entitled, "Canada's Forgotten Pioneer - Samuel Strickland, 1804-1867". Also included are extensive notes and correspondence documenting Baxter's research on Samuel Strickland, the Strickland family and Catharine Parr Traill. Also, an editorial cartoon on Strickland's "Farm School" (1856), several photographs of members of the Strickland family and properties, other graphical material and the Strickland family tree.

Fonds consists of a sketchbook (with marble paper covers) containing ten detailed pencil sketches of cityscapes, waterscapes and rural scenes - many in the Peterborough area. They were rendered by Ann Maria Walton (1799-1862), daughter of Port Hope's founder, Captain John Walton. Also included are hand-written notes entitled, "a few lines on perspective", by Ann Maria Walton. Specific sketches include: Little Lake, Jones Falls, Davis Hill, the Otonabee River, a mountain waterfall and other subjects.

The fonds consists of surviving business records of the Brinton Carpet Company, Peterborough. Included are: early business records (1910-1911); Bylaws and Letters Patent (1927-1973); General Managers Reports (1962-1963); Minutes of the Board of Directors and Annual Shareholder Meetings (1952, June to 1973, April); promotional material including a colour catalogue and poster featuring Brinton Oriental Carpets made in Peterborough (ca. 1950); photograph on board, of Brinton Carpet office staff (ca. 1930), two panoramic group photograph of Brinton employees ca. 1930 and August 1936), mounted photograph showing the interior of the factory and a Jacquard Axminster Loom in operation (ca. 1920) and other photographs.

The fonds consists of an extensive and detailed series of personal correspondence from Alex Butcher to his mother Margaret (Mrs John Butcher) of Burnham Street, Peterborough while Alex was overseas during the First World War (1915-1919); assorted receipts from various Peterborough businesses (1873-1927); newspaper clippings; a series of Butcher family photographs including: John Butcher in marching band, members of the Zaccheus Burnham family, Pratty family, Mr Hallet, Principal of Ashburnham Public School, Amelia Burnham and others; deeds relating to Butcher house at 309 Engleburn Avenue (Absalom Ingram House), Ashburnham; photographs relating to Margaret and John Butcher; photographs of the construction of the Hunter Street bridge which includes a view into Ashburnham taken from atop Quaker Oats and clearly showing several landmarks including the Calcutt Brewery, Mattress December, 1920); personal correspondence of Absalom Ingram and a number of items relating to St Luke's Church; legal documents relating to the sale of the Butcher house at 309 Engleburn Avenue (northwest corner, near Sophia and Burnham Streets, Ashburnham) from Rev Mark Burnham to Absalom Ingram, then to John Butcher and Margaret Butcher (daughter of Absalom Ingram; assorted accounts and receipts relating to the affairs of John Butcher including an account ledger of Absalom Ingram (1879-1896); hand-lettered and hand-painted illuminated certificate presented to John Butcher on his retirement as caretaker of St John's Anglican Church, Peterborough; a small framed photograph of John Butcher, standing beside the cast iron bell taken from the tower of St John's Anglican Church when new chimes were installed.

Specific items include: Brewer's License (1900); receipts and correspondence (Calcutt Brewing letterhead); Calcutt Brewery business ledger; a patent document with original plans on linen, for Henry Calcutt's "Improvements in Steam Boilers" (1895); lease indenture from Arthur Peck to Henry Calcutt relating to Calcutt Brewery property; assorted Calcutt family legal documents including original deed to family home at 73 Robinson, Ashburnham; minutes of the stockholders meeting (1911-33); receipt for a keg of ale for $1.50 (1886); a poem about an accidental spill at Calcutt's when people gathered gallons of beer that was pouring out of a spout; brief histories of some of the steamboats owned by Calcutt; some newspaper clippings.

Items include: bylaws and constitution; minute books (St Andrew's Society 1877-1898, Caledonian Club 1913-1947); membership lists (1913-1947); cash books (1913-1950); assorted correspondence and other items.

Fonds consists of the bound record books of the Peterborough Branch of the Canadian Manufacturer's Association containing original minutes (1925-1978), membership lists, membership applications, constitution and bylaws, correspondence; information about various local business and industries and issues that affected their operations. The first bound volume includes a historical summary of the organization.

The fonds consists of papers related primarily to Millbrook commercial artist and graphic designer, Carl Percy Martin (1904-1997). Included are: a series of personal correspondence from Carl Martin to his parents, (John and Lillian) where Martin is keeping them posted on his efforts to secure a job in Peterborough; a series of personal correspondence or 'love letters' (1900-1902) from a William J. Brown - foreman with the Durham Telephone Company to Carl's mother Lillian Hutchinson of Cavan; a small series of letters from Canadian artist Carl Ahrens to his pupil and friend Carl Martin (1931-1935); also examples of Carl Martin's graphic design work - including greeting cards and display containing provincial and national emblems (1920's circa); a published work by Carl Martin entitled, "Like It or Lump It" in which Martin provides an autobiography, poetry, sketches, recollections and opinion pieces (1990).

Fonds consists of an original album (or herbarium) with a leather cover, containing 51 pages of mounted ferns, grasses, moss and flower specimens, collected from the Douro township and Stoney Lake area in 1891, by Canadian botanist and author, Catharine Parr Traill. Each specimen has a hand-written note identifying it. Some also contain additional notes recording where it was collected, date collected and other characteristics. It is extraordinarily rare to find an intact Traill album containing as many as 50 or more pages of mounted specimens.

The fonds consists of original documents relating to Captain Charles Rubidge. The fonds includes: certificates and papers relating to Captain Rubidge's service in the Royal Navy (1801-1841); assorted correspondence and documents relating to Rubidge's service as land agent for Irish settlement in the Peterborough area, including a letter to Sir Francis Bond Head, where Rubidge indicates that he, "...has been engaged to undertake the charge and superintendence of a considerable number of families to be sent...to the Newcastle District.." (1839), a letter from Peter Robinson at York, where Robinson confirms that he "communicated to His Excellency the Lt. Gov. your [Rubidge's] acceptance of the situation of Agent ot reside at Peterborough for the purpose of Superintending the settlement of Emigrants...", (1831), a document outlining details an auction of Town Lots in Peterborough, a parchment land grant with seal, granting 200 acres of land on lot 30, concession 11, Otonabee Township to Captain Rubidge (1819); also personal papers and household accounts relating Rubidge's life and family including a sketch book by Mary Rubidge with a sketch of "The Beehive", Verulam (1862); various financial records relating to Captain Rubidge and John Rubidge; "Autobiographical Sketch" written by Rubidge (1870); a calling card that belonged to Charles Rubidge, (ca.1870); carte-de-visite studio photograph of Captain Charles Rubidge. The studio portrait taken by R.D. Ewing, shows Rubidge seated beside a table, wearing a suit with a military medal pinned to the breast pocket.

Fonds consists of a sketchbook containing several fine pen/ink, pencil and watercolour sketches of Peterborough and area, rendered in the early 1890's by Charles Wallis Forbes. Sketches include: a pen/ink and watercolour sketch of the Grand Trunk Railway Swing Bridge; a sketch of 57th Regiment - Peterborough Rangers at Toronto (July 1890); River Otonabee in winter; a pioneer man with musket in front of a log cabin; portrait a bearded man (1891); unfinished pencil sketch of a train derailment; front view of #4 steam locomotive; a winter view of a steam locomotive at the Peterborough Railway Station, (January 4, 1893); watercolour sketch of the steamship S.S. Mohawk (February 1893); pen/ink detail of Spanish cathedral at Gibraltar; sketch of a woman reclining on a sofa; watercolour and pen/ink "original sketch of grandfather Forbes" in Royal Navy dress uniform; ink sketch of John L. Sullivan from a photograph; assorted pencil caricatures and architectural detail studies.

Specific items include: a minute book (1920-1938); minutes (1939, 1948); correspondence dealing with issues such as the need for police protection, designation as a police village (1933), garbage collection, complaints from cottagers, regatta's and the proposed construction of a causeway across Chemong Lake (1933-1950); various financial records, cheque books and receipts (1949-1952); lists of paid members and cottage owners (1940's).

Fonds consists of two original carte-des-visite studio portraits of "Peterborough's strong man" Daniel Macdonald and his wife Ellen Macdonald.

The fonds consists of photographs, some correspondence, clippings and ephemera related to Lt. Commander David Rogers, RCNVR, and his work in Combined Operations during World War Two. Of particular note is a series of black and white snapshots of the 2nd flotilla (262nd RN) preparing for the D-Day invasion (Operation Overlord) at Portsmouth Naval Yard, crossing the English Channel and finally at the Normandy Beaches (June 1944); notebook maintained by David B. Rogers, RCNVR, starting with his stay on the H.M.C.S. "Quebec" (K-242) used for briefings, training and preparations for D-Day landing. The notebook contains instructional data on Luftwaffe aircraft, pencil recon drawings of German bombers, notes listing battle field first aid instructions, 'pep talk' notes, personnel lists for the 80th Canadian LCM (D-Day landing craft).

Fonds consists of 168 hand-tinted, framed photographic prints collected by T.H.G Denne that document Peterborough and area from the 1850's to the early 20th century. Fonds also includes four photograph albums containing the original prints (also hand-tinted) plus several additional prints and negatives. Fonds also includes a notebook of T.H.G. Denne containing notes about each photograph comprising the collection (1936); personal correspondence; an original map on linen of Peterborough based on Richard Birdsall's plan (dated 1823); scrapbook filled with clippings that relate to many aspects of local history and the Denne family; a visitors register to the Denne cottage, made of cedar bark and titled "Chemong Park" (1904); carte-de-visite and tintype photographs of Denne family members including: Henry Denne, Agnes Denne, Roland and T.H.G. Denne.

Fonds consists of Dennistoun family papers including: James Frederick Dennistoun's law diplomas from the Law Society of Upper Canada (1859, 1860); an auction catalogue to the sale of contents of Inverlea - the family home of Judge Robert Dennistoun in Peterborough (ca. 1888); assorted personal correspondence; notes relating to the Dennistoun, Beck, Brown and Boulton families, clippings related to a banquet held for Robert M. Dennistoun. Fonds also includes extensive business and legal records generated by Judge Robert Dennistoun, James Frederick Dennistoun and Robert Maxwell Dennistoun, such as deeds, mortgages, wills and estate papers, building specifications, leases, business correspondence).

Fonds consists of correspondence, photographs, diaries, reports, journal reprints and other material covering the professional and personal life of Doctor Russell Kneale Magee and to some extent, his wife Doctor Agnes King Moffat (1905-1998). Included in the fonds are papers documenting Dr Magee's medical career in the Canadian Army during World War Two, war surgery, Dr Magee's studies of experimental surgical techniques including the Kuntscher Pin and work with German POW's (1942-1946); the Peterborough Clinic (1936-1972); professional activities and contacts with medical colleagues; family and social activities; Dr Magee's diaries for the years 1945-1972 inclusive.
