Culbertson Tract Land Claim collection

This collection comprises documents received in response to an Access to Information request addressed to Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) by the Corporation of the Town of Deseronto, Ontario, in 2008. The request asked for copies of documentation submitted as part of the Culbertson Tract land claim of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte and upon which the decision to allow the claim had been based.

The documents in this collection are all photocopies of materials located in public archives in Canada. The materials range in date from 1779 to 1959 and record the interactions between the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte and the British and Canadian governments, in relation to lands, from the time of their departure from the Mohawk Valley to the mid-twentieth century.

Local recipe books collection

Sandra Slater Collection

The collection consists of correspondence, copies of articles on Shakespeare Township, booklets from telephone companies, a publication on the geology of Dunlop-Shakespeare Area, copies of school reports (originally created 1914-1963), copies of 1933-1956 reports on Shakespeare Gold mine and uranium mines, and personnel accounts of Shakespeare Township activities. Railway, mining, and timber activities, and a teacher recollection are among the handwritten accounts.

Inco Collection

The Inco collection documents different aspects of the International Nickel Company of Canada (Inco)'s economic, social, and labour activities. Consisting of photocopies of numerous newspaper clippings, magazine articles, press releases, and transcriptions of interviews and audio reports from 1946 to 1982, the documents inform us of the different events that involved Inco, such as the 1978-1979 strike. Industrial labour relations are documented with numerous reports and other publications. Inco's Collective Bargaining Agreements from 1942 to 1979 are also found in the collection.

David Lehto and George Prusila Collection

The collection consists of copies of interviews, programs, commentaries and news reports aired on Sudbury radio and television stations, including CKSO, CHNO and CBC, from 1958-66. All are related to trade unions in Ontario, but most of the events and activities described took place in the Sudbury region. Particular reference is made to the struggle between the United Steelworkers of America (USWA), Local 6500, and the International Union of Mine, Mill, and Smelter Workers (IUMMSW), Local 598, to represent the workers in the mining industry. There are reports on the 1958 Mine Mill strike, the USWA raids in Port Colborne and Sudbury, bargaining issues, and trade unions and communism. Prominent union leaders and activists express their opinions on a variety of issues, including David Lewis, Terry Mancini, Ken Smith, Mike Solski, Don Gillis, Nels Thibault, and Larry Sefton. Some of the talks and speeches are by civic leaders such as Mayor John Fabbro as well as politicians from the federal and provincial ridings for the region. A list and description of the tapes provided by the National Archives is also included in the fonds.

Gerald Goltz Collection

The Gerald Goltz Collection consists of postcards and photographs that depict northeastern Ontario throughout the years. The postcards are both in black and white and in colour, and were collected throughout the years by Gerald Goltz. Although most of the postcards were obtained locally, some were purchased from a post card dealer while others were purchased during travels. While some of the images are of Cobalt, Parry Sound, and Georgian Bay, the majority of the collection consists of images of Sudbury, Massey, Espanola, as well as other surrounding areas. Dating approximately from 1907 to 1975, the images depict scenic landscapes, local landmarks and buildings of these northeastern towns. Some of these postcards also consist of humoristic images. The 342 postcards were printed and distributed by over 35 different publishing companies, such as Valentine-Black Co. Ltd., Photogelatine Engraving Co., Sudbury News Service Ltd., and Heliotype Co. Ltd. Many of the postcards of Massey were made by Hugh Cummings, a local photographer.

Kunkel Family Collection

The collection contains original photographs, as well as several copies of photographs depicting daily activities of the Kunkel family in Sudbury and North Bay. While the majority of the photographs depict Bill and Grace Kunkel with their two boys, there are a few others of a football game and a telephone service center, for example. Although some of the individuals in the photographs are identified, most of the photographs are not dated, nor identified. There are a total of 110 black and white photographs and 2 color photographs. The collection also includes 2 newspaper clippings: one of the Sudbury Star and the other of the North Bay Nugget.

Robert S. (Bob) Atkinson Collection

The Robert S. (Bob) Atkinson Collection consists of two Northern Ontario photo albums depicting the Clay Region between 1910 and the 1940s. One album contains 299 photographs which document the development of Kapuskasing, the construction of the hydro-electric dam, the experimental farm, and the fire that destroyed it. The photographs also illustrate daily life, as well as various outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, and snowshoeing. Many of the photographs have the names of the individuals in them and even the locations, but not all are dated. There are also some photos of Iroquois Falls and Moose Factory in this album. The Moose Factory photos include the visit of Charles Lindberg and wife in August 1931. They also include photos of First Nations’ youth.

The second photo album of 262 photographs contains photographs of families and youth of Kapuskasing and other municipalities of the region, and documents their lives as well as summer and winter activities in the region. Only in a few are individuals identified and dated. In the album are also a large number of photos of the military including some of the Kapuskasing internment camp and various internees. Many of these are dated and contain the name of the individual(s) and location.

The Elizabeth Quinlan Collection consists of 6 interview transcripts. They include an interview with Kay Carlin from 1982 conducted by Barbara Dunphy; an interview with Anne Macks from May 3, 1993, conducted by Mercedes Steedman; an interview with Millie McQuaid conducted by Steedman; an interview with Olga St. Jean conducted on May 4, 1993, by Susan Vanstone; an interview with Pearl (Patricia) Chytuk conducted on May 12, 1993; and an interview with Val Biloki in 2 parts. These interviews concern the role of women in the Sudbury, Ontario, labour movement during the first half of the 20th century. The interviews were transcribed in 2010.

The Canadian Association in Support of the Native Peoples (CASNP) collection consists of the documentation accumulated by the CASNP. There are no administrative files or other records that address the administration or activities of the Association.

The resources consist of photocopies of newspaper clippings, reports, studies, and statistics. The documentation accumulated by CASNP provides an overview of the life conditions and status of Indigenous Peoples (First Nation, Inuit and Metis) in Canada for over 20 years. Most of the files concern Indigenous communities in Canada but some files address situations of Indigenous Peoples in the U.S.A., Mexico, New-Zealand, Australia and Africa. The different documents are filed under topics and cover many issues such as: education, rights, economy, life conditions, culture, racism, health, government policies (federal, provincial and municipal), as well as Indigenous associations at different political levels.
