Sisters' Ministries series

This series contains records related to general roles and duties that Sisters held in their ministries. There are also records concerning specific professional roles, including homemaker, nurse, music teacher and teacher. Records take the form of handwritten and typed notes on the ministries performed by individual sisters in 1999, and lists of sisters that performed specific roles in the congregation.

This series contains records that pertain to the renewal programs held in the summers of 1974, 1980 and 1981. The program included times of reflection, communal study and teaching presentations. This series includes photographs, a newspaper article, event programs, prepared sermons, lists of attendees, teaching guides, personal reflections, speaking notes, planning committee minutes, a facility map, agendas for meetings and renewal sessions, correspondence and bibliographies.

The series consists of records kept by the General Superior office for use in the administration of the community in London, Ontario. Material is primarily from the period during which Sister Margo Ritchie held the office, but it also contains material from when Sister Mary Diesboug and Sister Valerie Van Cauwenburghe held the position. This series contains twelve subseries relating to the operations, missions, and activities of the congregation. This includes the Medaille Retreat House, Josephs’ House, the Detox Centre, My Sister’s Place, St. Joseph’s Hospitality Centre, Elizabeth Place, St. Stephen’s House, the Southdown Project, Holy Rosary House in Windsor, the Goderich convent, and the Sisters of St. Joseph in Alberta. There is also material related to the hospitals in London, Sarnia, and Chatham administered by the Sisters and the transfer of operation of said hospitals to the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance and St. Joseph’s Health Care Society. There is material related to the construction of a new residence, especially concerning the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards of the new building, and relocation of the Sisters from Mount St. Joseph to this new residence.

There is also material related to the various meetings of the congregation, from the more informal Community Days to the more formal Assemblies and Chapters. Chapters are formal congregational meetings where major decisions, such as amalgamation and leadership positions were voted on. There are voting records from the 2011 Special Chapter and the 2009 Oneness Project in this series. There are also reports from the Leadership Circle, Chapters, and committees within the congregation. There is also material from the Federation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Canada, an organization made up of all the Congregations of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada. There is material from the Federation and the London congregation’s systemic justice efforts and the Sisters’ efforts towards concerning the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. There are various newsletters from the Federation and the London congregation. The series also includes administrative correspondence and speeches presented by the General Superior to the congregation.

This series consists of records produced in the course of the business activity of the General Secretary. There are documents pertaining to the history of the Sisters of St. Joseph, a pilgrimage taken in 2005, memorials and anniversaries such as the 135th and 138th anniversaries of the founding of the London Congregation, and Mother St. John Fontbonne. The series also contains material on the CSJ International Center in Le Puy-en-Velay, France, the sale of the Mount St. Joseph Motherhouse in 2004, and activity reports.

The materials were created predominantly in London, Ontario and Edmonton, Alberta. The main function of the materials in this series relates to providing information as well as the administration of the formation process.

Missions-Ottawa series

This series contains records related to the Ottawa, Ontario houses and ministries of the Sisters of St. Joseph in the Pembroke diocese. The records contain annals, correspondence, photographs, and records related to renovations and property purchase such as invoices and a deed for the Wilbrod Street building. The annals are for Emmaus (Argyle Street) house, the Hull house, Laetare house, the Lebrun Street house, and the Wilbrod Street house. The Wilbrod Street house and the Lebrun Street house files contain a small number of photographs of the Sisters who lived at these houses as they took part in daily life, special events, and trips. Another file for Wilbrod Street contains a large number of photographs that were removed from an album, and depict the building, Sisters ministering in the community, and daily life. The series is interesting in that it shows experiments the Sisters undertook in community living and in vocation work.

This series contains records related to the ministries in St. Philippe d’Argenteuil, Quebec, carried out by the Sisters of St. Joseph in the Pembroke diocese. The parish comprised about 550 families. The records contain annals, correspondence, photographs, a souvenir booklet, a newsclipping, and a few parish bulletins. The photographs depict the convent, Sister Constance Lacroix, one of two Sisters missioned there, and the church. The souvenir booklet celebrates the centennial of the arish in 1988. It is illustrated with photographs and is in French. The correspondence is in French and in English, and the primary correspondents are Sister Margaret Glofcheskie, the General Superior, Bishop Charles Valois, Sister Constance Lacroix, and two parish priests. The annals were kept by Sister Constance who arrived in the parish on August 31, 1985 to serve as the parish coordinator and a pastoral animator with the Laurentian School Board. The annals note interesting local events such as the feast of the cemetery held on the second Sunday in September during which people came to pray for the dead and to ensure the graves were decorated. As Sister Constance notes, “I felt that I could carry out what our first Sisters did in 1650, but I in 1986,” as she embarks on her ministry in the parish. She was to give guidance to parents for baptism, couples for marriage, and on burials. Sister Constance was joined in December 1986 by Sister Alice Meilleur.

This series contains records concerning the involvement of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Pembroke with St. Joseph’s Hospital in Barrhead, Alberta. The records cover the establishment of the hospital, the administration and operation of the hospital, the transfer of the hospital, and the Sisters’ involvement with the Catholic Hospital Association and the Alberta Hospital Association. Materials include financial records, agreements for the purchase and sale of property, annals, memoirs, pamphlets, booklets, newsletters, lot maps, hospital floor plans, hospital bylaws, correspondence, and photographs. The major topics within the correspondence include establishing and operating the hospital, finances, the purchase and sale of property, construction and renovations, Catholic hospitals and medical ethics in Alberta, the changing role of Sisters in the hospital, and the relinquishing of ownership of the hospital. The photographs are of the hospital and Sisters at various events and locations.

This series contains records collected about, belonging to, and created by Sister Theresa Marie Caillouette. It includes photographs, a poem she recited when she became a postulant, her resume, biography, and educational certificates and awards for her work. Notable inclusions are a certificate of distinction on completion of the Management Education program offered by the Ontario Hospital Association in 2000 and an award in recognition of outstanding volunteer service to St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chatham in 1995. She was an avid participant of the Canadian Medaille Team and received funding from the French Embassy to study the history of the Congregation in France. In 1986 she was honored as a researcher by the Federation at the 150th Anniversary event at St. Louis, Missouri. A chronology of her research activities, a certificate from the 150th Anniversary, and addresses she made to the Federation for the period from 1967-1971 are included. There are newsletters and news clippings documenting her views and her work, including a 1974 newspaper profile for her parish work at St. Joseph’s Convent in Sarnia and a profile in a newsletter announcing her election as General Superior by the Diocese of London on April 13, 1987. Her views on the role of Sisters in parish ministry are set out in a paper she authored in 1987. The paper is based on her seven years of experience as assistant to the local priest and her membership on the Diocesan Commission on the role of women in the Church and in society. Her reflection on conversion, published in Canadian C.S.J. Bulletin in 1991 while she was serving as Vice-President of the Federation, is also included.

The sous-fonds reflects Sr. Mary Lillian Kuntz’s time as an educator, judge, administrator, and her Congregational service. The earliest record is a class photograph from St. Angela’s College where she was a student, followed by her high school diploma from Catholic Central High School in 1953. The records have a global geographic spread with the inclusion of colour transparencies of her travels to the United Kingdom, Africa and Europe. The materials focus on her time in Yellowknife, NWT, Uganda, Nelson, B.C., and London, Ont. The sous-fonds includes photographs, sound recordings, moving image recordings, and a diploma.

The sous-fonds consists of records kept by Sister Mary Anthony Hartleib, the majority of which are about her artwork. The records include sale agreements, publications, and thank-you letters from groups that received her icons. Also included in the sous-fonds are some of her original artworks as well as photographic reproductions of artworks that may or may not be held in the Archives. The sous-fonds also consists of speeches and presentations written by Sister Mary Anthony, and certificates and records of graduation.

This sous-fonds contains material created and amassed by Sister Marie Angela Aubert. Sister Marie Angela Aubert was a writer of poetry, articles, poems and more and much of that material is included here. The scripts, records, and correspondence about the over 140 plays she wrote inspired by the Bible are present. A notable inclusion is The Great Adventure, a play written and produced by Sister Marie Angela Aubert for the 125th Anniversary of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of London. There is also correspondence with the Bishops of London granting her plays Imprimatur and Nihil Obstat, which means that the content of the plays was found to be in keeping with the teachings of the Church, are of good quality, and can be published. Her work was also included in Fine Lines: 1997 Anthology and Fine Lines II: 1998 Anthology by London & Area Writers. Both books are within this sous-fonds. In addition, there are various serial publications and clippings present which feature Sister Marie Angela Aubert’s poems, plays, reflections on her life and religious experiences, articles on education, and Letters to the Editor. There is also a research paper she wrote on the impact of Christianity in a detention centre. Sister Marie Angela Aubert was the Coordinator of R.C. [Roman Catholic] Jail Ministry Volunteers and the scripts for communion services at Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre are present here, too. The sous-fond also includes certificates, diplomas, transcripts, and teaching licenses presented to and earned by Sister Marie Angela Aubert, including her B.A. diploma from the University of Windsor and B.Ed. diploma from the University of Alberta. Sister Marie Angela Aubert spent much of her life as a teacher. While working at O'Leary High School she got the students involved in the Junior Achievements Program and at Catholic Central High School she supervised the CCH Business Club. Newsletters, administrative documents, correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, correspondence, and an article written by her from these two programs are included in this sous-fonds. There are also invitations, awards lists, and thank-you notes from Sister Marie Angela Aubert’s time at these schools.

This series contains records that describe administrative data about the Sisters including their membership in the congregation as well as any occupational roles that they fulfilled in education and healthcare. These files include handwritten lists, typed lists, directory books that list all the Sisters within the congregation and their contact information, and a booklet of Sisters’ feast days and the Necrology for Fall 2011 that lists the most recent deaths within the congregation.

The first subseries consists of biographical chronologies and speaking notes including a presentation to the St. Joseph’s Hospital Board in 1987. Included are copies of her educational achievement certificates and information about her membership in Sigma Theta Tau, the National Honor Society of Nursing, United States. There are several photographs and newsclippings from various times throughout her ministry. Highlights from the correspondence include exchanges with Bishop Sherlock, Bishop of London, an appeal to the federal government for aid to Ethiopia and a reply from the Minister of External Affairs, and a letter from the Vice-Chancellor granting approval to establish at chapel at a mission house in 1979. Copies of speaking notes for a variety of presentations are included with event programs. There are several letters of congratulations and greeting cards. There are a few mementos of her trip to Rome.
