Subseries contains communication documents produced by the Division 1969-2016. Documents include Communiques/News Releases/Press Releases; Clippings; Daily Blues; General Council Communications; Press re Residential Schools; and Profiles.

Communication education had been an activity of several of the Departments in the Board of Information and Stewardship, including Press and Information, Broadcasting and Audio-Visual. These Departments continued their activity in the new Division of Communication. In the 1960s and 1970s Rev. Robert Reid took on the work of communication education and was responsible for increasing the churches understanding and familiarity with different media of communication through seminars, workshops, bursaries, scholarships, seminary courses and professional consultations. Reid worked closely with Helen Currie to bolster communication education concerning audio visual materials. However in 1971 Reid was removed from the audio visual focus and was tasked to oversee communication education concerning all types of media. In 1973 Communication Education was placed under the purview of Media Services and offered advance courses in theological schools, and workshops at conference and presbyteries levels typically involving other denominations. When the 1973 transition happened, Keith Woollard, former Director of Broadcasting, concentrated his energies on a new Communication Education Staff Group and on regional relationships. The Communication Education Staff Group assigned the responsibility of giving leadership on Communication Education within the Division and in relation to conferences. The group was devoted to aiding United Church ministers and workers in utilizing all manner of communications (print, audio, visual) to more effectively make their message heard. In 1975 Division of Communication authorized the formation of a Communication Education Task Force to develop a strategy for communication education within the United Church. The staff group was assigned to follow through with the Task Group’s strategy, to follow through with involvement in community cable projects and absorb the responsibilities of the Media Outreach Task Force originally established to encourage and assist the Maritime Conference and the Saskatoon Presbytery to design informational-motivational campaigns. The same task group also communed with local congregations, presbyteries etc. to create a guidebook for media outreach.

In 1985 the Communications Education Committee was established. Their mandate was to assist congregations to communicate the Christian message and help members understand what was being communicated to them. Kristine Greenaway was very involved in this committee and worked as a Communication Education Coordinator in the mid-80s.

Probe '76 and subsequent Probes were interchurch programs created to make people aware of the power of modern communication in presenting the Christian message.

Television Awareness Training (TAT) was a program developed by Communication Education staff in 1977 which offered several seminars to UC presbyteries and congregations across the country to help people understand the effect that television had on their lives. A program called TVsCope replaced TAT in 1983 and provided greater versatility

Evangelism/Communication was program that promoted missionary work and focused on the religious affects of television on missionary work.

Subseries contains mission resources created in tandem with the Division of Mission in Canada, the Department of Stewardship Services and ecumenical groups 1954-1988. Resources were created in various printed formats, they often had av counterparts and were developed for varying age groups.

Subseries contains records of Mission Interpretation and Deputation, 1956-1984. Mission Interpretation and Deputation worked with the Division of World Outreach, the Division of Mission in Canada, and at the congregational level to ensure a devotion to mission understanding and support. One of its principal activities was arranging tours by missionaries on furlough in Canada. Subseries includes correspondence of the Director, correspondence to missionaries, and correspondence with Conference Coordinators of Mission Deputation for the years 1983-1984. This work was later adopted by the Department of Media Services in the 1980s.

Mission Study were resources created for study groups of various ages and types including children and UCW. Often a Mission Theme was developed.

Subseries contains correspondence with Pastoral Charges, Presbyteries and Conferences, a comprehensive set of files comprised of correspondence, press releases, reports and news clippings, collected by the entire Committee and Department staff as a central file relating to work within the United Church 1969-1979 (organized by Conference and within each Conference, often by Pastoral Charge or Presbytery).

Subseries contains correspondence, clippings and minutes concerning the Canadian Church Calendar developed by CEMS and the Anglican Church 1971-1995.

The Division provided grants to Conferences for production costs related to local programming. In 1967 there were regional broadcasting centres operating in the British Columbia Conference, in western Canada (including the Prairie Regional Broadcasting Council) and in Ontario (including the Western Ontario Regional Broadcasting Council), all of which received block grants from the Division. The programme had initially been administered by the Department of Broadcasting under Keith Woollard; he served as Associate Secretary for Regional Relations and Communication Education after leaving the Department of Broadcasting in 1973, until his retirement in 1983. Conferences continued to have their own Communications Committees which were supported by the National Division.
