Television Awareness Training (TAT) was a program developed by Communication Education staff in 1977 which offered several seminars to UC presbyteries and congregations across the country to help people understand the effect that television had on their lives. A program called TVsCope replaced TAT in 1983 and provided greater versatility

Audio/Video Production became a unit within the Department of Media Services in 1976, with Betty Richardson as producer. The Unit produced mostly audio cassettes. Responsibilities included recording of General Councils, Divisional meetings, and special events, and production of materials in response to programmes of the several Church Divisions, as well as maintaining an active library. In particular it produced "Godshow," an ecumenical radio magazine show, “Make My Day” which succeeded Godshow, and "Inside Track," an information series on audio cassette for the order of ministry, and it also publishes Visual Catalogue, which lists the holdings of its library.

Subseries contains administrative files, production files and files pertaining to Godshow, Make My Day and Inside Track 1962-1989.

In 1985 the Communications Education Committee was established. Their mandate was to assist congregations to communicate the Christian message and help members understand what was being communicated to them. Kristine Greenaway was very involved in this committee and worked as a Communication Education Coordinator in the mid-80s.

The purpose of the Communications Group was to galvanize people with communications responsibilities from units within the General Council Office, in order to implement a strategic communications program for the GCO. The goal was to create a simple, consistent, collaborative, efficient, and effective program. The General Council Secretary assigned the responsibility to develop and manage the communication to the Executive Minister of the Communications. The Communications Group focused on corporate communication tools that were produced to inform while the Publishing Group focused on resources produced to animate a program (See Series 2).

In 1989 the Department Education and Information was created. The Department combined Information Services (from the Department of Finance and Administration) with Mission Education, Interpretation, and AVEL (from the Department of Media Services). The Department also absorbed the responsibility of the Publicist. The department was active until 1996 when it was dissolved and the responsibilities dispersed to other departments within the division. From 1989 to 1996 Douglas Flanders held the position of Director. Kristine Greenaway worked under him as Communication Education Coordinator then Media Consultant.

Subseries contains the files of Mary Francis Denis, Doug Flanders and Kristine Greenaway concerning their work in the Department of Education Information 1975-2000. Files include Kristine Greenaway’s work re AVEL and records of the Resource Distribution Task Group.

This Department of Audio Visuals was adopted by the Division of Communication through the Board of Information in 1968. The Department was responsible for instructional communication concerned with the design and use of messages which control the learning process involved in communication research, communication education, search for resources, consultation and presentation, media production, and information and promotion. More specifically the Department produced film, still pictures (photographs, slides, filmstrips) and audio cassettes, which was usually undertaken at the request of other Divisions within the Church. The Audio Visual Education Library (AVEL) was administered by the Department during this period, and it played an early role in the provision of communication education. In 1973 the Department of Audio Visual’s joined with the Department of Broadcasting to form the Department of Media Services.

The Department of Broadcasting was transferred to the Division of Communication from the Board of Information in 1968. The Department was responsible for the production of radio and television of the Church, training and assisting regional and Conference broadcast staff, and responding to the major broadcasting networks. A large part of the production work was carried on in association with interchurch bodies including Religious Television Associates (RTA), the production arm of Interchurch Broadcasting.
RTA helped to produce "Spectrum" for a Toronto television station. In addition, the Department was responsible for United Church participation in the National Religious Advisory Council to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and a separate Religious Advisory Committee to CFTO-TV, a Canadian Television (CTV) affiliate.

With financial restructuring in the early 1990s, the United Church Publishing House was sectioned into two departments: the Department of Publishing and the Department of Retail and Distribution. The Publishing Department was further divided between two categories which mirrored the new financial divisions: mission and service. The mission area was considered to be venture publishing while service publishing referred to the production of resources for GC Divisions

Subseries contains publishing project files which include planning documents, copyright and agreement contracts, documents re printing and correspondence 1986-2001. Subseries is arranged by area of work mission and service as well as general publishing projects which cannot be places under ether work area.

The Director's Office was occupied by G. Earl Leard (1973-1983) and Rodney M. Booth (1983-1989). As Directors they took responsibility for the entire Department, and relations with other Departments and Divisions of the Church and external bodies.

Subseries consists the Director’s correspondence, reports, and office files relating to all facets of the Media Services Department, including film, the Canadian Interfaith Network, television, radio, and still pictures, interdenominational bodies (Religious Television Associates, Interchurch Communications) and external bodies 1959-1998.

In addition to the Division Executive there was a Division Management Team that was a staff group comprised of the General Secretary, Directors of the five Division departments and managers from those departments. There were twelve people involved, six men and six women. The term "team" was unique to the Division as the other Divisions had fewer staff and departments.

In 1985 the Statistics and Information Office was transferred from General Council to the Division of Communication’s Department of Finance and Administration as part of a new Information Services Unit.
This unit also took over the News and Public Relations functions. Doug Flanders served in the Research Office/Statistics and Information Office of General Council from 1980-1985 when the office was transferred under the name of Information Services Unit. The unit was also responsible for producing the General Council Record of Proceedings, the United Church of Canada Year Book, and press releases by the publicist. In 1989 this unit became part of a new Department: Education and Information within the same division.

Subseries contains records of the General Council Research/Statistics Information Office transitional period to the Division of Communication and also records of the Information Officers and related staff of the unit. Files include staff portfolios, correspondence and research pertaining to the statistics of the united church 1970-1988.

The position of Publicist was first created in 1987 and was under the Department of Finance and Administration of the Division of Communication. The position was held by Mary-Frances Denis from 1987-2017 though the title changed various times. In 1989, the position was moved to the Department of Education and Information (still under the Division). In 1996, the position title changed to Manager, Public Relations and Information Unit. In 1999 the position of Manager, Public Relations and Information became a part of the Public Relations and Marketing Cluster of the Division of Communication. After the re-organization of General Council administrative units in 2001, the position of Communications Officer was created and became a part of the General Council Support and Services Unit. When the Office of the Moderator and General Secretary was created in 2003, the position became a part of that unit. Under another re-organization in 2005, the Communications Officer position was moved to the newly created Resources, Production and Distribution Unit. In 2010 the Resources, Production and Distribution Unit was re-named Communications, and the position title was changed to Manager, Public Relations and Information.

Subseries contains the records of Mary Francis-Denis in her various positions relating to publicity. Files include her correspondence and notes 1986-2008.
