Sub-series consists of monthly summaries of accounts payable by the TGH, in the form of itemized lists of outstanding accounts showing name of creditor, amount owed and nature of the debt (i.e. “pay rolls”, “elevator licenses” etc.).

Sub-series consists of quarterly comparative expense analyses for 1934-1935 (October-December only), 1935-1936, 1936-1937 (January-June only), 1940-1941, and 1941-1942. Analyses for 1937-1938, 1938-1939, and 1939-1940 are missing. Analyses are comparisons of Hospital expenses over a 12 - month period (e.g. October-December 1934 as compared with October-December 1935), classified by Hospital buildings, departments and type of expense.

Series consists of records created and collected by the TGH Finance Department and predecessor bodies, and by individual executive officers responsible for maintaining the general financial records of the TGH. Records include financial statements, ledgers, accounts payable records, comparative expense analyses, financial and statistical returns, correspondence as well as deeds and endowments.

Sub-series consists of annual (1877-1891; 1944-1952) and monthly (January 1945-May 1947; December 1945, 1946, 1947; January-November 1964) financial statements summarizing the general expenses and revenues of the TGH.

Similar material in the form of annual reports of TGH revenues and expenses by external auditors (Clarkson, Gordon & Co., Chartered Accountants) ifound in sub-series TG 2.2 ff. (Superintendent’s Correspondence and General Administration files, 1928 ff.).

Files 32.1.1 to 32.1.15 each contain a statement of revenue account sheet and balance sheet. Files 32.1.16 to 32.1.53 each contain eight statements: General Expense and Revenue; Operating Expenses; Revenue and Expense Departmentally; Details of Operating Revenue; Details of Operating Expenses; Cost of Meals (Food Only); Details of Food Consumed; Balance Sheet. Files 32.1.54 to 32.1.64 each contain seven statements: Statement of Revenue and Expense; Statistical Details; Analysis of Revenue; Analysis of Expense; Statement of Revenue; Expenses (Department of Diagnostic Radiology); and Balance Sheet.

Files 32.1.16 to 32.1.29 each include a monthly report re: Hospital finances prepared by the Superintendent for the Board of Trustees. Files 32.1.34 to 32.1.36 and 32.1.38 to 32.1.42 each contain a summary of accounts payable report.

Files occasionally contain agendas for monthly meetings of the TGH Board of Trustees at which the financial statements were presented and ratified.

Statements for August 1946, December 1964 and the year ending December 31, 1947 are missing.

Sub-series consists of copies of annual financial returns for 1946 to1951 and annual statistical returns for the years 1928-1952 for the Toronto General Hospital and the Wellesley Division of the Toronto General Hospital. These returns were sent to the Department of Health of the Province of Ontario. The financial return for 1952 is missing and the statistical return for 1951 is missing. Financial returns contain five statements: Statement of Departmental Expense; Balance Sheet; Revenue and Expense Statement; Costing Schedules; Statement of Operating Revenue. Statistical returns contain statistics on the hospital such as the number of beds, number of patients, number of hospital staff and number of patient deaths.

File 32.5.1 contains budget projections, notes and calculations created by the TGH Secretary, Mr. A.F. Miller in the course of preparing estimates of projected Hospital expenses and revenues, 1876-1886. File 32.5.2 contains a budget manual prepared and distributed in 1974 by the TGH Finance Department to provide instruction to Hospital managers responsible for preparing departmental budgets.

Sub-series consists of wills and other estate papers concerning the bequest of money to TGH as well as deeds, mortgages, papers of sale and correspondence concerning land transactions. File 32.8.21 includes the first tax return and financial statement for The Toronto General Hospital Foundation for the period ending December 31, 1973, and correspondence from McCarthy & McCarthy Barristers regarding the tax status of the Foundation (1974). File 32.8.60 includes documentation relating to the use of funds for, and the naming of, the Medical Library. File 32.8.61 includes statements for the Fudger Medical Library Fund. File 32.8.126 includes curricula vitae for, and three research papers by, Kenneth Gordon McNeill and Joan Elizabeth Harrison. File 32.8.103 includes the names and expenses of staff and post-graduate nurses who benefitted from the Shenstone Fund. File 32.8.106 includes a list of books purchased for the Wellesley Division Nurses’ Library ca. 1950s. File 32.8.125 includes correspondence with lawyers and the U.S. Treasury Department regarding applications by Toronto General Hospital to obtain tax-exempt status. Both the original ruling from 1961 declaring TGH not exempt, and the original ruling from 1963 revoking the 1961 ruling and providing TGH tax-exempt organization classification are included.

The original order has been lost, but it is suspected that estate files had been kept alphabetically. No attempt has been made by the Archivist to try to reestablish a strict alphabetical order. Files 32.8.125 and 32.8.126 relate to grants and not estates or property. It is likely these files were mixed in with the estate files when they were originally sent to the Foundation.
