Fonds consists of the letters of Frances (Browne) Stewart written to members of her family in Ireland and letters received from them. Some letters relate to her upbringing in Ireland while other describe her voyage to Canada and her life homesteading in the unsurveyed township of Douro. Stewart describes pioneer life, the settlement and development of Douro and Peterborough, Upper Canada, and provides details of the social, family, religious and economic life in early Ontario.Some of the Stewart letters were published in an edited version as "Our Forest Home." She comments on the career of her husband, Thomas A. Stewart and his unsuitability to life on an uncleared farm.

Fonds consists of research materials relating to early nineteenth-century Irish immigrants, Thomas Alexander Stewart and Frances Browne Stewart, of Douro Township, County of Peterborough in Ontario. Included in the research materials are photographs (including 3 daguerreotypes), genealogical family charts, and articles and papers relating to Stewart family descendents and other Peterborough settler families. Also included is the personal correspondence of Jean Shearman.
