Series consists of textual records created and collected over the course of John McDermid’s working life, excluding correspondence, which is found in Series 3. This includes campaign material, predominantly from the 1984 federal election campaign, invitations and programmes for events, and certificates for awards and parliamentary appointments. The series is arranged chronologically within file groupings:

Files 1 - 30 are records accumulated during McDermid’s career, including records from before running for office, and ends with his retirement from politics.

Files 31 - 32 are signature books for multiple events, which span from his 1979 election victory to an open house held in 1989.

Files 33 - 35 are blank documents with McDermid’s professional letterhead. Note that file 20 in this series has letterhead from his 1988 election campaign.

Files 36 - 37 are records from after McDermid’s retirement, but still thematically connected to his political career.

Files 38 – 39 consist of political ephemera.

Files 40 – 41 contain certificates for an award and parliamentary appointments that McDermid received as a public figure and politician. Note that Series 7 also contains certificates.

Note that Series 2 also contains records that chronicle McDermid’s election campaigns and his achievements as a member of Parliament.

Series consists of black and white photographs depicting various personnel, ships, establishments and functions of the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN). Includes photographs regarding frigates, destroyers, corvettes and minesweepers, the reserves, as well as photographs documenting the visits of state and foreign dignitaries and military officers. Also includes captions, some individual and some in list format, and a small number of press clippings, press releases, itineraries and binders cataloguing press release dates. There are some subject files consisting of textual material and covering a wide variety of subjects.

Series consists of minutes to the meetings of the Naval Board. Some minutes contain maps, graphs, tables, and handwritten notes, and includes information on a variety of military topics regarding the Royal Canadian Navy. The meetings span from early 1942 to mid 1964, including the Second World War, Korean War, and Cold War periods. The first set, consisting of original records, is open to DHH staff only. There is also a complete set of duplicates of minutes, consisting of original records and photocopies, which is open to researchers, as well as a third incomplete set of duplicates.

Series consists of material documenting the history and activities of the Canadian Naval Service during the Second World War. Includes naval weekly reports, summaries of the naval war effort, weekly progress reports for the Defence Council, weekly summaries for Senior Officers and monthly reports on the naval activities in the Esquimalt and Halifax areas. There are also monthly reports for the ports of Quebec, Gaspe, Sydney, Montreal, Shelburne and Cornerbrook, as well as for the Newfoundland Escort Force. Also includes reports of proceedings for the HMCS Captor II base in Saint John, N.B., minutes to meetings of the Naval Staff for Naval Service Headquarters and various other documents.

There are documents regarding landing crafts, Canadian landing Craft flotillas, combined operations training for Dieppe raid, and the loan of RCN combined operations personnel to the Royal Navy. Includes correspondence, naval messages, memoranda, monthly information bulletins and various other documents.

Series consists of Canadian Naval Mission Overseas (CNMO) and British Admiralty secret signal series during the Second World War, as well as Canadian Forces Headquarters (CFHQ) CANGENS for 1962-1966. The CMNO signal series included CANOPS, CANMO and CRYSTAL BALL. Whereas CANOPS reported on operational and other movements of HMC ships operated by the British Admiralty during 1944-1945, CANMO reported on general information regarding Operations OVERLORD (code name for the Allied landing on the coast of Normandy on D-Day, 6 June 1944) and NEPTUNE (title given to the actual landing phase of Operation OVERLORD) during 1944-1945. CRYSTAL BALL was concerned with the present and future movements of Canadian ships in 1945. The British Admiralty signal series included NATEL, OPTEL and STRATREP, and they reported information on operation in all theatres during 1943-1945.

Series consists of material documenting the naval history of Newfoundland, particularly during the Second World War, the 1950s and 1960s. Includes reports on buildings and facilities at St. John's, Botwood and Bay Bulls in 1944, as well as maps indicating navy and army installations at St. John's in 1941. There are clippings, articles, papers, naval messages, memoranda, extracts and notes.

Series consists of documents dealing with the University Naval Training Division, its history at different locations across Canada, and its budgetary and funding concerns. Also includes the personal correspondence of Commander A.W. Baker, Staff Officer University Training, as well as the syllabi for the first to third years during 1944-1945. There are also photographs of UNTD training cruises to Europe and Churchill, MB during the early 1960s. The series is arranged into two groups – UNTD Locations in Canada and General Files – with each group arranged in alphabetical order.

Series consists of reference files that were begun by Naval Historians in the 1940s and regarding the general history of the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN). Initially, the series was organized chronologically and, with the exception of a block devoted to "General" RCN history, it retained this organization until the late 1960's, with files added to cover contemporary periods. The earliest files contain some fairly extensive specific documentation of the founding of the RCN. Files from the middle period (1930-1950), however, are quite sparce, with those dealing with the Second World War devoted almost exclusively to statistical compilations and notes on pertinent wartime files for use in preparing the naval history. The most recent files contain few original documents and were given over increasingly to press clippings, most notably articles from the Crownest. Includes Naval Historian's notes, correspondence, newspaper clippings, brief narratives, assorted essays and publications, drafts of articles and other documents. The series consists of 26 volumes and the list of contents for each volume is partial.

Series consists of historical files on Halifax, Nova Scotia and covering a very broad range of topics, especially the city's military and naval heritage since its founding in 1749. The files are of a very general nature, although some subjects, such as the Commanders in Chiefs at Halifax, are quite extensive. Series consists of historical files on Esquimalt, British Columbia and covering a very broad range of topics, including the military, naval, and maritime heritage of the Pacific northwest. The series is very general in nature, with some material on the "Japanese problem" of the Second World War. Includes Naval Historians' notes, correspondence, copies of articles, newspaper clippings and narratives. There are 15 volumes and the list of contents for each volume is partial only.

Series consists of documents concerning naval intelligence on Russia during the Second World War. Includes reports on interrogation of Russian Masters of ships, Russian coastal information and supply routes, Siberia and United States intelligence on Russian ships. Also includes notes on Russian ice-breakers and the Far East, as well as naval messages regarding Russian motor launches.

Series consists of weekly intelligence reports issued by the Admiralty Naval Intelligence Division during the Second World War. The information was for of all British officers in H.M. Navy and for all British officials to whom the reports were officially distributed. The contents of the reports included five parts including: weekly naval notes (current events); special contributions (naval articles and/or information of a general interest); political (naval articles and/or information re a specific country; divided by individual country; Naval intelligence (disposition of German, Italian and Japanese naval fleets and enemy submarine activities); and Merchant Shipping (information regarding attacks on merchantmen, overdue ships, allied convoys, German and Italian shipping).
