The collection consists mainly of correspondence between John Elmsley and John Simcoe Macaulay, dealing with official, military and political affairs, as well as personal financial matters. Most of John Simcoe Macaulay's correspondence deals with property and financial interests in Canada before and after his departure for England in 1843. Other subjects in the correspondence include the clergy reserves and the Clergy Reserves Bill, and the building of a church on Trinity Square. Records are arranged in chronological order.

Macaulay family fonds

Fonds consists of records of various members of the Macaulay family, including Robert, John and William Macaulay. Records include correspondence, promissory notes, accounts, agreements, certificates, commissions, militia orders and rolls, lists of men exempted from the militia, a copy of an affidavit, a power of attorney record, a probate record of the will of Robert Macaulay, a draft of a Bill, the minutes of a vestry meeting, and records relating to the Female Benevolent Society of Kingston. Fonds also contains a 1921 obituary of Charlotte T. Macaulay.
