The Canadian Mining Journal fonds consists of speeches, original articles, note transcriptions, office memoranda, correspondence, mine claim abstracts, exploration diaries, printed material, and photographs.

These materials relate the history of mineral exploration, mining and processing in Canada, particularly in Northern Ontario and Quebec. More specifically, there are texts on the activities at Hewey Gold Mines, Hollinger Mine, Long Lac and Magnet Lake, as well as other sites. The photographs are of miners, mining equipment, mine structures and landscape at Lamaque Mine, Buckingham, McIntyre Mine, and Siscoe Mine. There is also an autobiography of a mining engineer.

There are gaps along the time line, where only a few documents represent a large period of time.

          CA ON00159 P121 · Fonds · ca. 1898-1904

The fonds attests to Charles Kenneth (C.K.) Leith’s activities as a surveyor in Northern Ontario, while in the employ of the Ontario government. The records contain maps and reports of different regions of Canada that were surveyed by Leith, as well as around the American side of Lake Superior. The reports and drafts of mine claim sites, and his correspondence, are informative of the development of the Cobalt region in terms of mining. Many of the printed maps or originals are annotated, and document some of the geological surveys done by C.K. Leith. Some of the correspondence deals with investments or claims made by Leith and his colleagues. The fonds also contains drafts and official reports written by Leith, which appear in the Annual Reports of the Ontario Mining Ministry.
