    Biographical history

The Hawley family are United Empire Loyalist, descendants of Jeptha Hawley. Mark Hawley was the son of Jacob Q. Hawley. Mark Hawley and his wife, Ida Letitia Brandon, inherited the family farm in Richmond township (concession III, west half lot 27) where they lived their entire lives. Their son, Donald Brandon Hawley, hoped to pursue higher education, but this was interrupted by the death of his father at which time he inherited the property. He operated the farm until his retirement in 1990. The business was mixed farming, including dairy cattle and corn production.

    Custodial history

The papers were acquired by the Lennox and Addington Historical Society from Donald B. Hawley in 1995.

    Scope and content

The Hawley Farm fonds consists mostly of documents concerned with the financial operation of the family farm, including some farming periodicals and catalogues. There are some personal papers from before 1900, from Jacob Q. Hawley and Mark Hawley, but most of the material is twentieth century. Also included are Donald Hawley's investigations into post-secondary education opportunities in the 1930's. Fonds is comprised of the following series: Donald Brandon Hawley, education, 1932-1933 Hawley family investments, 1946-1947 Agricultural periodicals and catalogues Jacob and Mark Hawley, personal papers Hawley farm accounts, 1900-1970
