    Biographical history

    Hans Carol (1915-1971), educator and author, was appointed professor and chair of the Department of Geography at York University in 1962. He remained chair until 1967 when he took up an appointment as director of the Graduate Programme in Geography, remaining in that post until shortly before his death. His early interest was in African geography and the urban geography of Zurich, but he became increasingly interested in the theory and methodology of geographic study in his later years.

    Scope and content

    The fonds contains Hans Carol's lecture notes, examinations, course outlines and evaluations, bibliographies, student essays, and related material for courses taught in the Department of Geography (Africa, Urban, patterns of land use, methodologies) and Social Science (1962-1971). In addition, there are copies of several articles by Carol and others dealing with topics in geography, research notes on field trips in the Arctic, Africa and Europe (Zurich, London, Paris), manuscripts and drafts of chapters for one or more studies of African geography (1963-1970). There is correspondence relating to publications, professional activities and related material. There are also maps and charts of the following regions: Zurich, with regard to urban planning; African geography, including physical, social, agricultural, demographic and related maps; urban planning and land use in Ontario regions (Metropolitan Toronto, Hamilton). The fonds contains several boxes of newspaper clippings relating to Africa (1954-1971), Canada (1962-1970), the USSR, China and allied countries (1959-1964), Regional Government and Development in Ontario (1966-1971), and related topics in several countries.
