Biographical history

John Hamer Greenwood (1829-1902) arrived in Canada from Wales in 1850 and settled in Whitby, ON where his uncle, John Hamer, was already well-established in the community. Greenwood was known in the community for his career as a prominent lawyer and Mayor of Whitby from 1872-1875 and 1883.

John Hamer Greenwood married Charlotte Churchill Hubbard (1846-1902) in 1865 and they had ten children together, many of whom went on to enjoy success both in Canada and abroad. One of the most celebrated Greenwood children, Thomas Hubbard 'Hamar' Greenwood, had an exalted political career in the UK and ascended to the title of 1st Viscount Greenwood.

As adults, many of the the Greenwood children, including 1st Viscount Greenwood, retained a significant interest and affection for their hometown and they often returned and provided financial contributions to projects in the Whitby community.

Custodial history

Scope and content

Sous-founds consists of correspondence, photographs, newspaper articles, transcriptions, and a book related to specific members and genealogy of the Greenwood family. Correspondence is between local historian, Brian Winter, and several members of the Greenwood family in an attempt to surmise biographical information on Viscount Greenwood and the Greenwood family in general. Where possible, series have been separated into specific family members to compartmentalize information collected on these individuals. Sous-fonds is divided into the following series: William Hamer Greenwod; Mary Harriet Greenwood; Gladys Greenwood (nee Rodney); Photographs; Books; and Miscellaneous Correspondence.
