História biográfica
Francis (Frank) La Grange Farley (1870-1949) was a bird watcher active in St. Thomas, Ontario, and later in Alberta.
Farley born in St. Thomas, Ontario, on February 24, 1870. He carried out his early bird watching activities in the St. Thomas area, before moving to Red Deer, Alberta, in March of 1892. He owned a farm there until 1907, when he moved to Camrose, Alberta. He travelled all around the provinces, collecting data for a proposed book on Alberta birds, publishing many of his observations in the Canadian Field-Naturalist. The books remained unfinished at his death.
Farley became an Associate of the American Ornithologists’ Union in 1946, and was promoted to full member only two weeks before his death. Farley died in Camrose, Alberta, on October 22, 1949.

Âmbito e conteúdo
Fonds consists of five small volumes of bird observation notes and bird sighting lists from Francis Farley’s time in St. Thomas, Ontario.
All five volumes include a section of narratives of bird watching excursions, as well as monthly charts of birds observed, tracking the first and last appearances of various birds in each given year. Farley was an inconsistent diarist, and so the dates of the entries can at times be far apart.
The first volume includes lists of birds seen between December 1887 and March 1888, brief notes on birds seen and heard from January 1888 to March 1888, narratives of field trips between May 23, 1888 and August 1888, and monthly migration charts for January 1888-1889. W.E. Saunders, the London, Ontario ornithologist and pharmacist. Was a companion on at least one excursion. The volume also includes a list of bird skins made in 1888.
The second volume includes monthly bird migration charts for March to October of 1889 and field narratives from February 10, 1889 to February 2, 1890. The third volume contains narratives and monthly bird migration charts for February to August of 1890, as well as a list of eggs taken in 1890.
The fourth volume includes monthly bird migration charts, field narratives, and bird lists for August to October of 1890. The inside front of the notebook is inscribed ‘Georgina Farley Spelling Book, and includes vocabulary lists on some pages. The fifth and final volume contains monthly charts and narratives for March to June of 1891, as well as bird lists for 1895.
