The Benjamin and Mary Avery fonds contains textual records, photographs, maps and documentation mostly relating to Benjamin Avery’s accomplishments as a Forester and administrator. While some of the photographs depict his stay at Yale and his participation in sports, most are of meetings with administrators of different pulp and paper companies. The newspaper clippings and correspondence pay tribute and document his different roles and achievements in the sector of forestry.

Birth certificate, certificate of Naturalization, and US Army records with diaries documenting 5 years of Mr. Avery’s daily life offer insight into his private life.

The personal and public tributes after his death and the naming of the Benjamin F. Avery Physical Education building at Laurentian University are also well documented and outline his role and the recognition of his significant contribution to Forestry and the population of Northern Ontario.

Frederick O. Robinson fonds
Fonds · 1937 - 1963

Frederick O. Robinson was born in Port Arthur, Ontario on Aug. 2, 1903. He attended public and high school in Port Arthur and then served his apprenticeship to the machinist trade in the C.N.R. shops. He worked for 25 years as a skilled machinist in the Port Arthur shops of the C.N.R. until his election to the Ontario legislature in 1943. He continued to work as a C.N.R. machinist between sessions of the legislature, and after his election to the office of mayor, he worked in the C.N.R. shops on weekends.

He entered public life in January 1943 when he was elected to the Port Arthur Board of Education. In August of the same year he was elected to the Ontario legislature as C.C.F. member for Port Arthur. He was M.L.A. for Port Arthur until his defeat in 1951. II. Political Affairs (relating to the C.C.F.)
III. The Ontario Legislature and Provincial Affairs, 1943-51
IV. Provincial and Local Affairs.
V. Local and Municipal Affairs.

The George Hill fonds documents a period of 20 years of the Dominion Tar and Chemical Company Canada Creosoting Division, Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) creosote plant in Sudbury. Composed of photographs, a notebook of memorabilia with a preamble, records from the plant, and maps relating to the CPR Creosote plant in Sudbury, the fonds provides an overview of the operations and the workflow involved, but also illustrates the layout of the plant, including the different buildings and machinery. The preamble, consisting of comments and explanations by Hill, provides an understanding not only of the set up required to process creosote, but also of the different steps involved. Moreover, an engineering blueprint of the layout of the plant with references to photographs and annotations by George Hill offers a visualization of the plant and the machinery.

Sheets of wages, lists of employees and their roles at the plant, and a grievance on the work conditions complete this comprehensive presentation on the CPR creosote plant.
