Biographical history

Rollande Boutin (née Beaudoin) is from Sainte-Hénédine, a small parish municipality in the Chaudière-Appalaches region of Quebec, historically known as the Beauce region. She is the second child of a family of fifteen.

In the mid-1940’s, Rollande Boutin leaves the family farm in order to attend teacher’s college, also known as l’École normale, in the region of Mauricie. In 1947, she becomes a teacher at the Saint-Jean-Baptiste School located near her hometown. After her employer refuses to give her a pay raise, an aunt living in Northern Ontario suggests she comes to work in Calstock, a small village located west of Hearst.

Rollande Boutin is hired in 1950 by the Arrow Timber Company to teach in Calstock. She goes back to Quebec during the summer of 1951, but ultimately decides to come back to Northern Ontario after she is offered a job in Jogues. She officially retires from teaching in 1953 to get married and dedicate herself to her family. After they are married, Rollande and her husband, Gaston Boutin, move to Sherbrooke, Quebec, where they will stay for four years. In August of 1957, they move back to Hearst, where they will raise their seven children.

After all her children are grown up, Mrs. Boutin starts doing volunteer work in the local schools.
