Biographical history
Laurent Guindon was born in Opasatika, on November 17, 1939. In 1954, he registered at Le Petit Séminaire de Hearst, now l’Université de Hearst, where he completed his secondary and undergraduate studies, and was part of the institution’s first group of university graduates. He then furthered his studies at the College of Optometry of Toronto, which conferred him a doctorate in 1966. In 1964, he married Rita Vaillancourt, a young school teacher from Hearst. The couple settled in Hearst, where, seconded by his wife, he opened an optometry practice, in 1966. His career in optometry sprang from 1966 to 2006. He then sold his practice to his son Thierry. During that period, Laurent Guindon also offered optometric services in the surrounding area: Hornepayne (1967-1969), Kapuskasing (1969-1978) and Longlac from 1995. Laurent Guindon died on August 8, 2012.
