Administrative history

Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP is a law firm in Toronto, Ontario. The firm began as Beatty and Chadwick in February 1863, and has evolved through various firm names over the years. Researchers interested in the history of the firm should consult:

Kyer, C. Ian. "New Light on an Old Firm." Law Society Gazette (June 1984): 205-9.

Kyer, C. Ian. "The Transformation of an Establishment Firm: From Beatty Blackstock to Faskens, 1902-1915." In Inside the Law: Canadian Law Firms in Historical Perspective, ed. Carol Wilton, 161-206. Toronto: Published for The Osgoode Society for Canadian Legal History by University of Toronto Press, 1996.

Custodial history

Records in the fonds were accumulated by members of the firm, most recently by lawyer and historian C. Ian Kyer, and stored in firm offices. Some records, such as those pertaining to Walter Williston and Hugh Rose, were donated to the firm by their family members. In January 2009, due to reduced office and storage space, Kyer was instructed to destroy or find another home for the material, and arrangements were then made for a donation of these records to the Archives of the Law Society of Upper Canada.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of records created and accumulated by members of the Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP law firm and its predecessor firms. These records document the nature of the firm's legal practice, its finances, the internal organization of the firm, and its administrative processes, as well as biographical information about firm partners and records pertaining to the history of the firm. Records in this fonds include correspondence, memoranda, financial statements, ledgers, photographs, certificates, reports, newspaper clippings, committee minutes and partnership agreements. The fonds has been arranged alphabetically in seven series. Also included is a sous-fonds containing records of firm partner Walter Williston.
