    Administrative history

The Ernestown Women’s Institute located in Ernestown Township, Lennox and Addington County was founded on November 19, 1926 with Mrs. Fred Hamm as the first President. This branch was a part of the Lennox District Women’s Institute. Twenty-seven members attended the first meeting. Ernestown disbanded on March 5, 1975, likely due to low membership. The branch’s early objective was to help in all community projects. Beyond this, the Ernestown Women’s Institute also offered courses available to members of the community, such as sewing classes and First Aid courses. The local schools received many donations from the Ernestown branch over the years, showing how the members valued education. These donations included providing hot lunch outfits, First Aid kits, a water tank, books, sports equipment, and a desk pencil sharpener. An accomplishment that this branch is particularly proud of was cleaning the local Lutheran cemetery during the early days of the branch; they continued to make donations to cemetery maintenance until they disbanded. During World War II, the branch sent boxes to the local boys who were overseas and to families of War Brides in England. Much of their efforts were dedicated to supporting the Red Cross by making items to be sent overseas. Ernestown branch also contributed to the War Charities Fund. Hosting euchre parties was a popular form of raising money for this branch. Locally, many organizations benefitted from these efforts, including local families during times of need. Quilts were also made as a fundraiser for the branch and were donated to members of the community. Within the area, the branch made contributions to the Household Science Judging Competition, Napanee Fair, and 4-H Club. Some of the larger organizations which the Ernestown branch contributed to were the Cancer Society, Children’s Aid Society, C.N.I.B., Canadian Appeal for Children, Salvation Army, and March of Dimes. The members of Ernestown branch worked towards creating a healthier environment for their community. They petitioned the government to promote the need for health units in county districts of Ontario. They also promoted that poisonous substances should be sold strictly by a licensed dealer. Ernestown has one Tweedsmuir in its fonds, which was compiled by Mrs. Willie (Marguerite) Kellar and Mrs. John (Irma) Scheffler in 1974. It contains a history of the Women’s Institute, a copy of the speech from the fortieth anniversary meeting, a brief summary of meetings from 1961-1975, and copies of newspaper articles about community events. Some of the past Women’s Institute Presidents of Ernestown were: Mrs. Fred Hamm (1926-1930), Mrs. Harry (Iva) Mott (1930-1932), Mrs. G.L. (Vera) Young (1931-1934), Mrs. Clarence (Phyllis) Thompson (1934-1936), Mrs. Everton (Mary) Thompson (1936-1938; 1940-1943), Mrs. Harry (Minnie) Raworth (1938-1940), Mrs. George (Rhoda) Miller (1943-1950; 1952-1954), Mrs. George (Mary) Smith (1950-1952), Mrs. Sam (Rose) Rippi (1954-1957), Mrs. Alec (Mave) Hagerman (1957-1959), Mrs. Gordon (Beth) Hunter (1959-1961), Mrs. Gerald (Iva) Hurley (1961-1963), Mrs. Carl (Irene) Hurley (1963-1965), Mrs. John (Irma) Scheffler (1965-1967), Mrs. Ed (Ada) Buck (1967-1969), Mrs. Al (Thelma) Jenkins (1969-1971), and Mrs. Earl (Barbara) Hagerman (1971-1975).
