Biographical history

The East Nissouri Junior Institute held its first meeting on January 24, 1950 with Isobel Tye as President and Donna Calder as Secretary Treasurer. The average attendance, for their first year, was about 15, with the girls receiving aid from Miss Summer King, the home economist for Oxford County. Their topics included such subjects as personality, table etiquette and gardening.

In January 1951, the group reorganized with Isobel Tye as President and Doris Robinson as Secretary-Treasurer. During that time, it was decided to make the Junior Institute a joint initiative with the Junior Farmers. That year, eight meetings were held.

On January 8, 1952 the Institute reorganized again with Viola McCorquodale elected President and Gwen Tye as Secretary Treasurer. In June of that year, the executive change again, with Joan Garlick elected President (a role that she would remain in until January 1954). The attendance for their meetings for the year was about 17.

In August 1953, a successful Hobby Fair was held, and a number of Variety Shows were held with the Junior Farmers in 1953 and 1954.

In August 1954 Joan Craig was made President and Norma Harris was name Secretary-Treasurer, as Gwen Tye was leaving for Nurse’s Training. By 1954, the group had its own separate Junior Institute Fund and were able to make a number of charitable donations to various community groups.

It is unknown when the East Nissouri Junior Institute disbanded.
