Notice biographique
Alpheus E Byerly, a noted Guelph doctor, historian, and collector, was born in Anamosa, Iowa on September 9, 1894 and died in Guelph on June 13, 1960. Byerly immigrated to the Guelph area in 1921, and practiced medicine in Rockwood for a short period. He later moved his practice to Guelph, where he lived for the remainder of his life.
Byerly is most noted for his interest in the history of southwestern Ontario, and as the author of historical works, a novel, and many newspaper articles. He wrote The Beginning of Things, Fergus, and The McCraes of Guelph, as well as the historical novel Janet Campbell. Byerly also wrote a regular column in the Guelph Mercury called Our History. His participation on the 1927 Centennial Mercury Edition was indispensable. Byerly also founded the Wellington County Historical Society, and was a vital member for many years.
