Administrative history

Dunwich United Church, located at 179 Nancy Street in Dutton, was established on Oct. 2, 2011 with the amalgamation of Chalmers United Church in Cowal, St. John's United Church in Dutton, and Wallacetown United Church. It is still an active congregation of the United Church of Canada.

Chalmers United Church in Cowal was established in 1925, formerly Presbyterian. A Presbyterian Church in Cowal was first built in 1856. The church was first connected with Cook's Church in Caradoc but in 1876, it became part of a charge with Duff's Church. In 1890, the church separated with Duff's and joined with McBride's Church. A new church was dedicated in 1902. The church joined the United Church of Canada and formed part of Lawrence Station Pastoral Charge with Lawrence Station and McBride's. The charge disbanded ca. 1962 when Lawrence Station joined Southwold Pastoral Charge and Cowal formed a two-point charge with McBride's. In 1965, it became part of Dunwich Pastoral Charge with St. John Church in Dutton and Wallacetown. It closed in 2011.

St. John’s United Church in Dutton, also referred to as Dutton United Church, was established in 1925, formerly Methodist. Methodists first started meeting in Dutton ca. 1872 and a church was built in 1878. It was orignnally part of the Tyrconnell Methodist Circuit. The church joined the United Church in 1925 as a single point charge. Townline United Church in Dunwich joined the charge ca. 1928 until it closed ca. 1961. In 1965, it became part of Dunwich Pastoral Charge with Chalmers Church in Cowal and Wallacetown. It closed in 2011.

Wallacetown United Church was established in 1925, formerly Methodist. In 1876, Wallacetown Methodist Church was built. The congregation was was first connected with Fingal and later Tyrconnell, and by 1888 was part of the Dutton Circuit. It joined the United Church of Canada in 1925 and formed a two-point charge with Tyrconnell. It became a single-point charge ca. 1930, and remained as such until 1965, when it became part of the Dunwich Pastoral Charge along with Chalmers Church in Cowal and St. John's Church in Dutton.
