    Biographical history

Dr. Herbert Clarence Burleigh (1893-1980) was born in Hartington and attended Sydenham High School. He studied medicine at Queen's University at Kingston. After graduation, he moved to New York State, but in 1935 he returned to Canada and established a private practice in Bath, Ontario. In 1937, he became Medical Officer of Health for Lennox and Addington. He also became the founder and president of the Bath Historical Society. During World War II, he joined the Medical Corps and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Dr. Burleigh was proud of his United Empire Loyalist connections, and had a passion for both local history and genealogy. He was in demand as a public speaker and also published a large number of historical essays. Due to his popularity among his patients, Dr. Burleigh was often presented with old documents to use in his research.

    Custodial history

This fonds was left to the Lennox and Addington Historical Society by Dr. Burleigh and was transferred by his estate in 1981.
