Administrative history
The Division of Physics was established in 1957 as one of the original four divisions of the Ontario Cancer Institute.
The original activities of this Division focused on the construction of isotope machines specifically for use in radiotherapy. The Division was also involved in research on the effects of radiation on biological material through the examination of radiation physics, x-ray absorption and biophysical investigations using radiobiology. Eventually, investigations in nuclear physics were added to the Physics Division's research mandate.
The Division of Physics as originally organized, encompassed the departments of clinical physics, radiation physics and biophysics, and was responsible for the hospital's accelerator and machine shop.
The first Head of Physics was Dr. H.E. Johns.
The Division of Physics was responsible for designing and constructing three isotope machines — a rotating Cobalt60 unit, a ceiling mounted Caesium137 unit, and a head and neck Caesium unit. In addition to research conducted solely by the Physics Division, the Division worked in cooperation with both the hospital's Division of Biological Research and Clinical Services, and the Physics Department of the University of Toronto.

Scope and content
Series consists of correspondence with Dr. H.E. Johns, copies of grant applications, research reports, curriculum vitae and articles relating to Dr. Johns' appointment as Consultant with the Committee on Federal Research on Biological and Health Effects of Ionizing Radiation (FREIR) in 1980, and the appendices of the -Beam Project at TRIUMF which is comprised of photocopied and reprinted articles and reports. Series reflects some of the research activities and outside appointments of the Head of the Physics Division. Files 3.1-3.19 relate to Dr. H.E. Johns's appointment with FREIR. Files 3.20-3.64 relate to the Triumf Project.
