Administrative history

The Department of Public Relations was established in 1985.

The Public Relations Department was established to implement the public relations plan which included informing and educating the OCI/PMH publics about the Institute's policies, services, activities and goals, generating awareness of OCI/PMH's standards, achievements, and financial needs, monitoring public opinion and media sources, implementing a media policy, and working with the Princess Margaret Foundation to develop a consistent public image in support of fund raising. When this department was instituted, it took over from the administration the responsibility of annual reports, media relations, the OCI/PMH newsletter, special events, CARE Magazine, clinical and research reports, and other publications. The Department was also responsible for liaising with other staff to support communications, fund raising, visual presentations, hospital tours and other events. [OCI/PMH Administrative Policies and Procedures. Public Relations Policy. 10.10.01 / The Ontario Cancer Institute incorporating The Princess Margaret Hospital. - Toronto: July 1993 Revision]

The Public Relations Department was preceded by the Public Relations Committee, which was established in 1977 and reported directly to the Board of Directors of the Hospital.

When the actual Department was established, it was responsible to the hospital's Administrator.

Leslie A. Dutton occupied the position of Head of Public Relations from 1985 to 1995. She was succeeded by Gill Howard as Director of Public Relations.

Custodial history

Scope and content

Subseries consists of photographs and slides created for publicity purposes, and related textual materials. Records include photographs of the hospital, its staff, special events, visitors and equipment, and reflect various aspects of hospital life throughout the years. Some of these photographs were used for OCI publications and annual reports; others were used in displays; and some were set aside for enlargement and cropping. Files 1B.12 - 1B.57 were originally in unlabelled sleeves and loose piles and have been kept in the same order as they were found. No attempt has been made to impose an order on them. Photographs in file 1B.20 appear to be from the opening ceremonies for the hospital on September 25, 1958.

Physical condition

Immediate source of acquisition

These files were transferred directly to the OCI Library during the pre-move collecting prior to 1995. The original files were officially transferred to the Archives on September 17, 1996. Since then further accruals have been periodically transferred to the library. The department that transferred photographs to the Library prior to 1995 is unclear, as it is suspected that the photographs had been held in the photography department.
