    Biographical history

    Robert Dennistoun (1815-1895) was a lawyer and judge in Upper Canada. Born in Scotland, he emigrated to Upper Canada following the death of his father in 1834. He settled in Peterborough. Soon after arriving, he purchased 500 acres of land on Cameron Lake in Fenelon Township, and settled there. In 1837 he was appointed Justice of the Peace. By 1844 Robert Dennistoun entered the law practice of George S. Boulton in Cobourg, as a law student. He was called to the Bar in 1849. He opened a law practice in Peterborough and in 1864 was appointed County Judge. In 1856 he built Inverlea near the Otonabee River. Due to failing health, Judge Dennistoun retired in 1886. In 1888 the family sold Inverlea, and moved to Toronto. Judge Robert Dennistoun died in Toronto. James Frederick Dennistoun (1841-1886) was the eldest son of Judge Robert Dennistoun. He entered law in 1861. He became a law partner in the Lindsay firm of Hudspeth and Dennistoun. He returned to Peterborough in 1868 and formed a law partnership with E.H.D. Hall. He was also member of Peterborough Town Council and the local school board. Robert Maxwell Dennistoun (1864-1952) was a son of James Frederick Dennistoun. Born in Peterborough, he was educated at Queen's University. In 1892 he married Mildred Beck, daughter of Rev J.W.R. Beck, Anglican rector of Peterborough. He practiced law in Ontario, then Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

    Fonds was created and maintained by members of the Dennistoun family. It remained in the possession of family prior to donation to City Archives.

    Scope and content

    Fonds consists of Dennistoun family papers including: James Frederick Dennistoun's law diplomas from the Law Society of Upper Canada (1859, 1860); an auction catalogue to the sale of contents of Inverlea - the family home of Judge Robert Dennistoun in Peterborough (ca. 1888); assorted personal correspondence; notes relating to the Dennistoun, Beck, Brown and Boulton families, clippings related to a banquet held for Robert M. Dennistoun. Fonds also includes extensive business and legal records generated by Judge Robert Dennistoun, James Frederick Dennistoun and Robert Maxwell Dennistoun, such as deeds, mortgages, wills and estate papers, building specifications, leases, business correspondence).
