    Biographical history

T.H.G. Denne was mayor of Peterborough in 1901-1902 and also a miller. He was the son of Henry Denne who ran a mill with Anson Sperry. Henry Denne was the first cottager on Chemong Lake from about 1870. The Denne family had a great deal of cottage property at Chemong Park and later Stoney Lake. T.H.G Denne collected a body of prints he created by making copies from original ambrotypes, daguerrotypes, tintypes, stereocards, postcards and a few publications. These originals were taken by amateur and professional photographers alike. Denne is not known to have taken any of the photographs himself. He donated the collection to the City of Peterborough in 1937. He always intended to catalogue his vast collection but died in October 1942, before he could manage the task. Eventually the T.H.G. Denne Collection was transferred to the PCMA. In 1979 it was augmented by the bequest of family papers and more photographs from his daughter Phyllis Denne.

    Custodial history

The collection of some 200 photographs was compiled over several decades by T.H.G. Denne and was donated to the City of Peterborough in 1937. Eventually it was transferred to the PCMA. Denne was a collector not the photographer. He made photographic copies from several sources including ambrotypes, stereo cards, tintypes as well as postcards and even images copied from books. A set of these photographs were hand tinted by Elmer Strong and framed for public display. Denne's daughter Phyllis added photographs to the collection and some family papers, through a 1979 bequest.

    Scope and content

Denne containing notes about each photograph comprising the collection (1936); personal correspondence; an original map on linen of Peterborough based on Richard Birdsall's plan (dated 1823); scrapbook filled with clippings that relate to many aspects of local history and the Denne family; a visitors register to the Denne cottage, made of cedar bark and titled "Chemong Park" (1904); carte-de-visite and tintype photographs of Denne family members including: Henry Denne, Agnes Denne, Roland and T.H.G.
