Biographical history
Dan Macdonald was born in Scotland about 1838 and came to Canada at roughly 19 years of age. He worked as a partner in W.A. Scott's general store in downtown Lindsay. He married Ellen Baker of Peterborough in the 1860's. The family moved to Peterborough. Dan was noted as "Peterborough's Strongest Man". He was famous for lifting large and heavy objects such as bells and animals. Daniel Macdonald died in 1871 after apparently lifting 1600 pounds (possibly a pig) at the Market Square and rupturing a vital organ. His wife pre-deceased him by two years. Both are buried in Little Lake Cemetery.
Custodial history
Fonds was originally owned by Daniel Macdonald. After his untimely death, the photographs were under the care of the Macdonald family until donated to the PCMA in 1968.
Scope and content
Fonds consists of two original carte-des-visite studio portraits of "Peterborough's strong man" Daniel Macdonald and his wife Ellen Macdonald.
