Administrative history
The County of Kent was incorporated effective January 1, 1850 under the terms of the Baldwin Act, Chapter 81, Canada Statutes, 1849. It was an upper tier body with a 36 member council consisting of Reeves and Deputy-Reeves,depending on population, from its 21 member municipalities. Its responsibilites related largely to the upkeep of the road system, land regulation and home for the aged. The County of Kent did not have the power to raise money through direct taxation. Under the provisions of Bill 26, the Savings and Restructuring Act, 1996, the County of Kent was amalgamated into the new Municipality of Chatham-Kent effective January 1, 1998.
