Administrative history
The first issue of the Timmins Porcupine News, an English-language newspaper, was published in Timmins on November 6, 1974. A group of investors, including René Piché, owner of the Kapuskasing Northern Times, founded the weekly, which was then sold at .20$ a copy. Wayne Green, editor of the Northern Times was also responsible for the new publication. Presenting itself as a community newspaper, the weekly intended "to serve the Timmins area by mainly focusing on local news. Such things as minor hockey, school activities and service club projects may not be of national importance, but they are of particular interest to those who are involved. We will attempt to let the people of Timmins know what their neighbours are doing and to point up to the fact that this community provides an exhilarating and challenging atmosphere for its inhabitants." In January 1977, "the paper switched to distribution on a complimentary basis," hoping that this move would attract more advertisers. These efforts did not yield the expected results. In its last issue, published on June 28, 1978, the weekly invoked financial difficulties to explain its closure.
