    Administrative history

The Northern Miner is a weekly that was first published in Cobalt in 1915. At the time, Cobalt was a booming town which embodied all the hopes the mining industry had for Northern Ontario. The newspaper was founded by Ben Hughes and Ernie Hand. In 1916, Richard Pearce, a Toronto-based journalist, bought Hughes’ shares of the newspaper. Pearce’s brothers, Norm and Jack, then joined him, and by 1925, the Pearce family became the sole owner of The Northern Miner. In 1929, the headquarters of the weekly was moved to Toronto. The Pearce family owned The Northern Miner until 1989 when it was sold to Southam Business. It is now published by the Business Information Group.
