In 1980, Michael Atkins established the Northern Ontario Business newspaper to provide readers with relevant information about regional businesses, including the Far North, Northwestern and Northeastern Ontario regions.
Printed monthly, the journal provides articles about trends and forecasts of the regional industry. It also includes statistics and advertisements. It currently distributes to about 9000 subscribers, as well as many digital subscriptions. The digital edition has been available online since the early 2000s at www.northernontariobusiness.com.
The Northern Ontario Business "Events Division" organizes the following activities: Influential Women of Northern Ontario, Northern Ontario Business Awards, Canadian Builders Awards, Forty Under 40 Awards, and Sudbury Living Wedding Showcase.
Northern Ontario Business currently operates under the banner of Laurentian Media, parent company which also publishes the following magazines, newspapers and media sites: Northern Life, Sudbury.com, Sudbury Mining Solutions Journal, Northern Ontario Medical Journal, Sudbury Living, The Drift. Nonetheless, Michael Atkins remains president of Northern Ontario Business.
