History
Although the concept of the merger of Fort William and Port Arthur had first arisen in the latter part of the nineteenth century, no concrete action was taken until 1969 when the Ontario legislature passed An Act to Incorporate the City of the Lakehead (S.O. 1968069, c56). The Act provided for the amalgamation of the City of Port Arthur with the City of Fort William, to which were annexed the geographic township of McIntyre, which was withdrawn from the Municipality of Shuniah, and the geographic township of Neebing, which was withdrawn from the Municipality of Neebing.
The Act took effect on January 1, 1970, and the new entity became known as the Corporation of the City of Thunder Bay in accordance with the results of a plebicite held in June of 1969.
