Administrative history
The Water Commissioners were established in 1878 when Council passed a by-law to authorize the construction of a water works for the City of Guelph. The mandate of the Water Commissioners was to manage the construction and development of the water supply system to ensure safe and reliable water for Guelph residents. The Commission was composed of the mayor and three commissioners, who were elected for a one year term. It is not known when the Water Commission was disbanded.
Custodial history
The custodial history of these records, prior to their transfer to the Guelph Public Library archives, is not known or documented. It is believed that these records were transferred to the Guelph Public Library archives in the 1980's.
Scope and content
Series consists of three bound ledgers of meeting minutes of the Water Commissioners for the period 1878-1884 and 1907-1918. Included in this series are reports and recommendations of the commmissioners with respect to the development of the water supply system in Guelph, payment of accounts, and authorizations for water and sewage works. These records document the commission management of the water supply system in Guelph.
The volumes are arranged chronologically by year.

The 1878-1884 records were acquired from the Clerk's office of the City of Guelph.
Arrangement
Loose commission correspondence has been placed in folders for conservation reasons. These documents are located in Box 106 (F2-6-2-0-2 and F2-6-2-0-3) respectively.
