Administrative history
The Finance Committee was a standing committee of the City of Guelph Council and was established in 1852. Its mandate was to oversee the City's financial management and taxation functions. The Finance Committee reported to City Council and the Mayor of Guelph. It was composed of city councillors and a chairperson elected among them. Between 1874 and 1879, the committee was also known as the Finance and Assessment Committee.
Custodial history
The custodial history of these records, prior to their transfer to the Guelph Public Library archives, is not known or documented. It is believed that the Finance Committee minute books were transferred to the Guelph Public Library archives in the early 1980's by the City Clerk's Office of the City of Guelph
Scope and content
Series consists of twelve bound minute books, documenting the decisions of the City of Guelph Finance Committee regarding the fiscal activities of the City. The minute books record the recommendations of the Finance Committee concerning the payment of department, commision, committee and board accounts, activities of the City's Treasurer and Auditors, tenders and quotations, petitions from Guelph citizens for taxation and assessment relief and the authorization of expenditures on behalf of the City of Guelph. These records document the activities of the Finance Committee in managing the City's finances.
