Name of creator
The City of Guelph tax collector was appointed by City Council for a one year term. Council could also appoint a second collector, if needed. The tax collector's duties were prescribed by by-law and included the collection of public and separate schools, city and local improvement taxes within the City of Guelph. In 1886, the City Collector also acted as the Police Clerk and handed over all fines, forfeitures and costs received in police court during the preceding month, to the City Treasurer.
The custodial history of these records, prior to transfer to the Guelph Public Library archives, is not known or documented. The 1906-1907, 1910, 1921-1929 and 1930-1939 collector's rolls were transferred to the Guelph Public Library archives in November, 2001. The date of transfer for the remainder of the collector's rolls is not known or documented.
Scope and content
Series consist of sixty bound tax collector rolls, documenting the property taxes owed and received by the City of Guelph collector. These rolls include names of parties assessed, street and lot number, assessment value and amounts of real and personal property, school and city tax mill rate amounts, first and second tax instalments, local improvement charges, discounts or percentages added, remarks and tax amounts collected. These records document the City of Guelph's tax collection system.
The information recorded in the collector's roll is arranged by ward division. The volumes are arranged chronologically by year.
