Administrative history
The Board of Works Committee was mandated to oversee public works such as city buildings maintenance, roads, bridges, and sidewalks in the City of Guelph. The committee was composed of six aldermen, from whom a chairperson was selected, plus the mayor. The precise dates of creation and dissolution of this committee are not known.
Custodial history
The custodial history of these records, prior to their transfer to the Guelph Public Library archives, is not known or documented. It is believed that these records were transferred to the Guelph Public Library archives in the 1980's.
Scope and content
Series consists of four bound minute books of the Board of Works Committee for the period 1879-1909. Included in this series are minutes of committee meetings, copies of committee reports to Council, and committee resolutions regarding the construction, maintenance and inspection of roads, bridges and sidewalks, damage claims, accounts payment, purchase of public works supplies, land appropriations, maintenance and construction work at the Water Works, local improvement assessments and charges, tenders for equipment, machinery and public works projects, and labour relations related issues. These records document the role of the committee in overseeing the management of public works in the City of Guelph.
The volumes have been arranged chronologically by year.

Arrangement
Please note that the 1879-1883 minutes are in the same bound volume as the Road and Bridge Committee minutes (series F2-6-1). The Board of Works Committee minutes for 1884-1893 are in the same bound journal with the Railway Committee minutes (series F2-9-1). The 1905-1909 Board of Works Committee minutes are in the same bound ledger as the Public Works Committee minutes for 1910 (series F2-6-6).
