    Biographical history

    Catherine de Hueck Doherty (1896-1985), born in Russia, was a Roman Catholic social worker in North America. She established the Friendship House in Harlem, N.Y. (1937) and Madonna House at Combermere, Ontario (1947). She lived and worked among the poor in Toronto during the depression years of the 1930's. She was also the author of her memoirs and of poetry.
