Administrative history
The Faculty of Arts and Science was established in 1945. All courses in arts, pure science, journalism, applied science and engineering were consolidated in the Faculty of Arts and Science in 1946. In 1957, the Faculty separated into the Division of Humanities and Social Science and the Division of Science. The School of Graduate Studies was established in 1960, as an administrative unit of the Faculty of Arts, and its Director was made an Associate Dean. In 1963, the University reorganized into four faculties: the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The Faculty of Arts divided further, for administrative purposes, into the Division of Humanities (Divison I) and the Division of Social Science (Division II). Although each division had a separate director who made recommendations on faculty appointemnts and tenure, as well as on physical and academic planning, they operated as a unit in the areas of admissions, academic standards and graduation requirements. In 1967, St. Patrick's College, a small liberal arts institution, integrated into the Faculty of Arts to form a new division, which bore its name. In 1976, the divisions of the Faculty of Arts formally separated to create the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Social Science. The St. Patrick's Division, of the Faculty of Arts, ceased to operate as an academic unit in 1978, but its programs continued as courses in the University. In 1999, the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Social Science amalgamated to form the Faculty of Arts and Social Science
