Administrative history
Canadian Stage Company (CanStage) was formed in 1987 out of the merger of Toronto Free and CentreStage. Canadian Stage Company is one of Canada's largest theatre organizations, and can trace its roots back over 50 years. It operates four theatres: the Bruma Appel in the St. Lawrence Centre, two smaller theatres, and an open-air summer stage in High Park. Originally, under the direction of Bill Glassco and Guy Sprung, Canadian Stage sought primarily to present nationalist productions; however, the company has had major successes with popular intenational plays and promotion of Canadian presentations. The Canadian Stage Company officially rebranded itself as "CanStage" at the launch of its 2000-2001 season, a decision made to reflect its history and acknowledge its future as Canada's leader in contemporary theatrical art and culture.
