Biographical history

The Canadian Illustrated News was a popular weekly magazine that was published in Montreal, Quebec by George Desbarats from 1869 to 1883. Sir Hugh Allan, Sir John A Macdonald, Alexander Galt, and WP Howland are all depicted on the left as recipients of imperial titles which caused controversy among youth in the young country of Canada.

Printed in the December 20, 1873, edition of the Canadian Illustrated News. Donated to Lambton House in 2022 by David Raymont.

Scope and content

Sir Hugh Allan, Sir John A Macdonald, Alexander Galt, and WP Howland as well as other prominent Canadians are all depicted on the left while a group of young men is depicted on the right. In the centre is Miss Canada who declares “"I am quite ready to hear your pretensions, young people. You say you object to Imperial distinctions being bestowed on Canadians, yet these are my great men. Can you replace them?".
