    Portée et contenu

Collection consists of records acquired by A. Burke Doran. The collection contains four pages removed from the guest book of the Black Bay Duck Club, a hunting club located near Ottawa. The pages were used as exhibits in the 1946 hearings of the Royal Commission to Investigate the Facts Relating to and the Circumstances Surrounding the Communication, by Public Officials and Other Persons in Positions of Trust of Secret and Confidential Information to Agents of a Foreign Power. The Royal Commission resulted from the 1945 defection of Igor Gouzenko, a cipher clerk for the military attache, Colonel Nikolai Zabotin, of the Soviet Embassy in Ottawa. The pages bear the signature of Colonel Nikolai Zabotin and several other Soviet officials. Also included are correspondence between the legal branch of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Department of Justice, as well as J.J. Heeney, an original owner of the Black Bay Duck Club. The collection also contains two dictaphone wartime relocation certificates, and three samples of law firm letterhead.
